We had the good fortune of connecting with Julie A. Evans and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Julie A., we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I wouldn’t define myself as a risk taker – quite the opposite.
Even when i was working corporate taking huge production decisions on thousands of units getting produced, I would spend hours trying to calculate and minimize the risks.
Founding a technology company is a big risk – and I will be honest with you, I do miss the security and comfort of doing a job I know perfectly and where I was taking so much personal risk.
At the same time it’s not challenging to know perfectly what you are doing and to stay forever in your comfort zone.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The way we started is by trialling – our hypothesis was: can crowds of consumers predict the success of a retail product? So we tried. And it was incredible.
So we got our first client. We bootstrapped to build a platform. And we got more clients. And more data.
Then we could see data was recurring so we started organizing the data – what if we feed the machine with organized, structured data – can it calculate for example the likelihood of success of a particular color?
Yes.
It can do it per product family, per market and so forth.
We realized that if we can predict so accurately then we can really have an impact.
A financial impact but also an environmental impact
It takes 800 gallons of water just to produce 1 t-shirt so the idea is: let’s produce the ones consumers actually want.
We are proud of what we have achieved so far and what it could impact in the future!
Sustalytics empowers fashion brands to waste less and profit more by predicting what will sell.
Retail professionals can upload their visual concept on the platform and know consumers preferences in a snap.
It’s a win-win situation where the retail industry by making sure they produce only what people want can benefit from a financial impact but also generate a positive environmental impact.
And when you know at least 1/3 of what is produced is actually not wanted by consumes, you understand the impact can be huge.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When my friends visit (i realize this hasn’t happened in such a looooong time but soon) – there are a few key stuff i like to plan which includes of course a Heat game and the Wynwood walls.
My personal favorite is to roller blade so obviously crossing the Venetian, taking the ocean walk and finishing with a sunset aperitive picnic in South Pointe.
Kayaking in Miami is also a personal highlight to discover and enjoy what Miami has to offer – I’d throw in some sunset drinks at The Standard one night of the week too.
+ A night out a Calle Ocho and some good local food (personally I love Nicaraguan food and always pop by Yambo which is nearby).
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Definitely Sustalytics team- what an amazing opportunity to work with such talented experts in their field and most importantly how cool is it to work with people who share the same goal and values?
And this goes to every member including talented interns who taught me so much – yes – even when you have a wide experience you can learn from new talents and I do every day.
Kuddos to all of you for making Sustalytics what it is today.
