We had the good fortune of connecting with BenJamin Banger and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi BenJamin, is there something you can share with us that those outside of the industry might not be aware of?
Outsiders are unaware of how large the gap is between being a beat maker and a producer. Its really LEVELS to this shit haha. I’ve been making beats since I was a teenager and that “producer” transition only happened in the last 4-5 years.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I feel like what sets me apart from a lot of other producers is my sonic diversity and how open I am. I can create a lot because I have a lot to draw from and I have a lot to draw from because I try to learn from literally everything that happens around me. Whether its art, music, a conversation, something in a movie, or even a meme, I’m looking for the value and how I can graft it into my “programing”.
I got to where I am today by simply saying “Now what” after everything I accomplish. Big and small. You can’t ever get satisfied. And is that easy? On paper, not at all. Its not even in human nature to move like that since we’re creatures of habit. But if you really love something as much as I love creating, it will never feel like work. You have to be completely honest with yourself though. Do you REALLY love it ? Because if not, you’re going to go through hell for no reason.
I’ve learned countless things along my journey but the one thing the biggest lesson of all is “If you can’t save money you’re useless and all you’ll ever have is excuses”
At the end of the day, what I want people to take away from my brand is “B.A.N.G” and that acronym stands for : boldness, and nonstop growth. you literally can’t lose if you move with that sentence in mind. Its like the formula for winning.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
They’d be coming with me to the studio all week long lol. I don’t really like shit or go outside like that.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shout out Prince & Austin Kleon. This combo set the stage for me to become the Ben Banger that I am today. Around the time Price passed away, I had just got fired from my job. I spent that new free time reading Kleon’s book “Steal Like An Artist” and listening to any Price interview I could find. It felt like his death reignited my spark for educating myself. Nothings been the same since then. I’m actually planning on making a vinyl version of my 1st album, The Gxod Poet”, and sending to to Kleon as a gift because “Steal Like An Artist” was the 1st book I read from start to finish in my whole life for recreation.
