We had the good fortune of connecting with Sabrina Castillo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sabrina, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Starting my own business is something that I thought about and thought about, until I finally realized overthinking creates barriers and challenges and lost time.
The process became clear when I got clear with the following:
How do I want to spend my time?
How do I want to contribute to my community?
What are my core values?
A lot of the time, a business starts as just the end profit goals, but in the end I believe a sustainable successful business means it is aligned with how you want to spend your time, how you want to contribute to society, and your core values. This process of getting clear was the thought process behind my coaching business.
In the end, I want to spend my time helping women, especially working moms, I want serve my community to create new narratives that works for them, and I want to create a joyful life with my family. My business allows me to do all those things.
Once I got clear with that process, I was able to clearly create a business model that works for me.
What should our readers know about your business?
I have a life and leadership coaching business at Mom Thrive, and I’m a partner at The Dream Lab, an entrepreneurial and personal development incubator community for Latinas by Latinas.
My mission is to help women tap into their unlimited potential and hold space for their dreams without fear through coaching. I knew I wanted to be a coach for years but to be honest, I didn’t know where to start and it was not easy. I learned that to help others crush goals, set boundaries, expand as a leader, and to succeed, I would have to do that for myself, go through the journey for my self.
I have the life experience, I’ve overcome failure, doubt, and climbed the corporate professional ladder but I needed to understand how to use that to serve others. I became trained as a leadership coach through the John Maxwell Team and currently provide leadership trainings, one-on-one coaching, and group coaching through The Dream Lab.
The challenges in a business like coaching, is getting clear on who you can help, you focus on everyone, or you will focus on no one. I decided to focus on working moms, moms who have a business or work in corporate with high sights on new heights.
I learned that being authentic and vulnerable is important, people are tired of the curated narrative that makes them feel alone. As a proud immigrant, I know it is not the cultural norm to share the challenges, ups and downs, but it’s how I connect with women and I love it.
I want people to know that if you work with me one-on-one, through The Dream Lab, or any other venture I decide to go into, it will always be with the priority to hold space for people’s dreams with out fear. I know at times, that’s all I needed to keep going.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I happen to live close to NYC but also surrounded by amazing areas in NJ. If a friend came to visit, first is first, we would visit our family restaurant, Carlitos Barbecue Taqueria, and we would eat tacos at the park and catch up.
We would spend a day walking through the city and enjoying the way you can just roam in the city, then we would head to some of my favorite areas like the west village. I would also head to Queens, where I lived for years so they can experience the food and variety of cultures, finally have day to head over to Brooklyn because I love the Brooklyn Bridge Park in Dumbo.
To be honest, if it’s a few days, I would make sure we have a day to take a drive to hike and head upstate where we can really enjoy time to catch up.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This is such a good question because as you enter entrepreneurship you have two choices, 1) take it all on yourself, or 2) get a tribe and learn as much as you can, plus keep learning.
In my 20s I had a false illusion that I would get to a point where I knew everything and would need no one, I was wrong.
Being around like minded individuals is so important and I have Life and Confidence coach plus business partner, Audrey Robles Diaz to thank for her support. Having a safe space to share ideas, failures, vision, and to be able to get curious is so important.
Books, especially audio books are my go to, and a few that have made a bug difference is The 5 second Rule by Mel Robbins made a huge difference for me in the beginning of my journey; The Calling by Rha Goddess; High Performance Habits by Brandon Burchard; and The Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod, plus anything from Tony Robbins.
