We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristia Franklin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristia, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Starting my own business was like second nature for me. I grew up seeing both my parents as entrepreneurs and I was raised to think that anything I wanted I could get if I worked for it. Without even knowing it I started my own business because I would want little things and my mother taught me the concept of buying and selling, making a profit and using that profit to buy what I wanted to buy. I did just that and started to use my profits to buy more things to see back, I started this from the age of 9.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I am the owner of www.tiatheclothesgril.com it’s an online store that caters to women who want to dress different. My journey has been a very long one, it’s still unfolding. My website has also been my biggest struggle so hard, hardest thing I’ve ever done but I’m determined to figure it out and be successful. I have had to pivot a lot and reassess my brand lots of times but I know God will show me the way. I keep going because of my faith in God and because I honestly think this is in his plan for me, just for me to fulfill my part. Along the way I’ve learnt patience, and to be patient with myself and that it’s all a growing process and it’s not a race, I have to give myself time to be successful.
My brand started in the island of Jamaica by me, a girl that loved fashion and always wanted to help persons to express themselves through fashion like how I achieved it. Help persons who have a big personality but doesn’t have the words express it, or is too shy to fully express themselves, I help them through the way they dress.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We would have to go to Negril! I recently started going but I think it’s so magical there, I’d take her to the beach! To the great hole in the wall food spots. Next up we’d go to Pelican bar, a bar out in the sea that you take a fisherman’s boat to, we’d spend our day there drinking beers and playing games.
Up next we would have to go on a good tour, go to melrose and get some traditional roast yam and saltfish, then Murray’s to get some curry and jerk pork, then into Kingston, so many options we could go restaurant hopping.
The next road trip would definitely be Portland, my favorite place on this earth. We would go rafting in the blue lagoon and swimming by the cold water spring.
Next we would go to St Thomas out at the bath with the piping hot water coming out of the rocks where the locals massage you with the minerals from the earth right by the river side.
We would go to Ochi St Ann, the parish of eight rivers and we would go in them all.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mother and my aunts
