We had the good fortune of connecting with Brit Drozda and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Brit, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
My life doesn’t feel complete without musical expression. Singing, playing piano, playing guitar and songwriting are an extension of who I am as a human being. I’ve played piano since I was 4 and sang my whole life. They are not only creative outlets but forms of therapy for me. When I took a break from music, I felt lost. By rediscovering it and making it my career focus, I feel fulfilled. Each new song I write, and each performance opportunity, allow me to grow as an artist and to connect with new people. Music is much more than a career. It is a lifestyle.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My sound is Folk-Rock, Pop-Folk. Lyrics have always been a huge focus of mine from the get go. Each song is rooted in the lyrical content and then further shaped by the form and melody. I have been pursuing music since 2008. I’ve lived in Charlotte for a long time but recently relocated to Palm Beach County, FL.
I absolutely love being a singer-songwriter. I’m a classically trained pianist and continued that through high school in North Palm Beach and up to Davidson College in N.C. I attended a semester at Berklee College of Music during a summer that also helped further my musicality with songwriting, singing and piano.
There was a point in time when I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to be a musical artist. I had been pursuing it for several years after college and felt like I wasn’t getting anywhere. I felt creatively blocked and took a break to go into the culinary arts. I received my Associate’s Degree in Culinary Arts in Charlotte, NC at Johnson and Wales University. I then established a small business as a personal chef and culinary instructor where I would teach in home healthy cooking lessons and cater dinner parties.
When my son was born in 2013, through a combination of colic, postpartum depression, exhaustion and the challenges that come with new motherhood, I realized that I was once again, “lost.” During my son’s nap, my guitar happened to be within my line of sight, I picked it up, wrote “Let Me Hang the Moon” and that sent everything back into motion. The song itself is very special, because it captures all the emotions and thoughts of how fleeting parenthood is, but it also reminds me each time of the day I took a leap back into music. From there, I have recorded 3 EPs and a full album. My most recent release, I recorded with Grammy Award Winner Scott Jacoby at Eusonia Studios in New York City and Grammy winner Emily Lazar mastered the project.
I am so excited to bring my creative pursuit to Florida and look forward to many new songs and performance opportunities to come. I am proud of myself for launching my career as an independent artist and continuing to pursue my passion no matter where the journey may take me.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to Le Bar au Vin on Palm Beach where I have performed on their beautiful white piano. We would grab a cocktail there and then hit up San Ambrose for dinner. I love having so many outdoor dining options. Then, the following day, since I’m up in the Juno Beach area, I would head to the beach for a long walk to scope out fresh turtle tracks and the tide pools along the rocks on the beach. I’m such a fan of the Loggerhead Marine Life Center that I would take my guest there to learn more about our beaches and the turtles that come each year. Lunch would be at Hurricane Cafe, a local favorite of mine that has been around since I was in high school. Then we would pop up to Jupiter and paddle board, check out the lighthouse and hit up Lucky Shucks for dinner. I’m a big beach goer too so spending some of the day at the beach would be a must. I love packing a lunch or picking up 3 Natives and hitting the beach with. my husband and kids. For shopping, Vagabond in Palm Beach Gardens or Lifestyle So Chic on Palm Beach would be on my list to check out.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to give a shoutout to the amazing producers I have been able to collaborate with Jason Scavone, Scott Jacoby and Zach Ezickson. Each of them has allowed me to express my songs to their fullest potential by lending their amazing talents. I also am so thankful for my family who have always supported me in my music endeavors, showing up for performances, critically listening to my music and praising my efforts. I’m especially thankful for my children, who give me a reason to set an example and to write the music that will be our legacy.
