We had the good fortune of connecting with Myrnelle Singh and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Myrnelle, what role has risk played in your life or career?
My idea of risk goes back to the old adage that says “no risk no reward”. I believe risk is important for us to move outside of our comfort zone. The things we fear of losing usually leads to growth. I can say I’ve made some pretty risky moves in my life and career and they have help me grow exponentially. Risk takes on the role of bravery at that point it feeds our confidence making us more fearless and the idea of taking bigger risks becomes less momentous. Of course I’ve risked many times and failed but what came was a valuable lesson for the future. When you see it this way you realize you never really lose because life is teaching you how to win.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
For as long as I can remember Ive travelled and dreamt in my mind. Those dreams fueled me to create ways to achieve these crazy ideas, weather if it was music, dance ,singing, acting , playing with hair, or fashion and sewing clothes. Everything I’ve ever enjoyed doing most was from a creative place I thrived in this environment . I see beauty in almost anything. Eventually I needed to make money and promised myself that no matter what the job I would put my all and if I didn’t like it anymore it was time to move on.
This is what led me to hair, I loved fashion and beauty and this was a trade that was always in need. It seemed like a smart choice to me that came naturally. I remember my first job at 13 working as a receptionist at a Fantastic Sam’s! Later I did hair and make up artistry which ushered me to go to school for
Cosmetology. It was really hard these early years, I was a pretty poor immigrant girl who didn’t receive scholarships or any financial aids, I had to to work a lot of jobs that I didn’t want in order to get by while I tried to get into school on my own accord, one being my first entrepreneurial endeavor opening a residential cleaning company called Every Little Detail at 18 fresh out of high school. After some time and a couple moves I landed finally at a Cosmetology school in Miami that was not accredited at the time, it allowed me to pay my tuition weekly while working at a salon as a part-time assistant to get by.
To look back now I know I’ve learned the value and the negative aspects of hard work and showing up, my view was to see it all as stepping stones to the next level. There are many ways to accomplish things and knowing that if one way doesn’t work I can brainstorm another, this continues to serve me to this day. I want people to know that I create my world , my identity is in all things I pursue, this demands spending a lot of time deciding how I feel about a given thing. Knowing who you are is your brand, the more we can express this the more our brand grows out of our stories, the stories of our life truly shape our brands as people.
As of late I’ve taken a step back from working to focus on my health, long story short I was diagnosed with Stage 4 Metastatic Breast Cancer since 2018. This new path has challenged me in the most difficult of ways, as a career oriented person I didn’t know who I was without working or where my real value stood. This birthed a new appreciation for studying my mental health. So many have told me that I inspire them so much with my strength and ability to keep pushing on. I say the will to live is the only thing we can arm ourselves with. With that comes the hunger to learn as many ways to cope and conquer. Having reassessed my life has brought me to pursue public speaking. I don’t want to tell others what to do, but I am aware of how people respond to my stories, if I help just one person have a moment of hope, it gives me hope.
I apply the same ethic when I started as a hairstylist and later a salon owner, just start with one and maintain consistency and it WILL build. Trust the process and enjoy the ride for all its complexities.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
So this is a pretty hard question in my opinion only because everyone is so different and Miami is so diverse, but nevertheless if my BFF were coming to town, this is what I would plan. Sunday, drag brunch@ R house in Wynwood, then a crawl over to Wood Tavern for Backyard Boogie Day Party. Monday night we would head over to Bay Club in Sunset Harbor for Comedy night and dinner, they have amazing Kale Ceaser Salad ,Pies, and Meatballs. Tuesday maybe shopping at Brickell City Center then Coyo Taco for Taco Tuesday, of course you have to hit up the mescal bar in their speak easy after. Wednesday to me is the best day to get your mid-week tan on, this would be a chill day at the pool or even maybe an early morning kayak with iPaddle over at the 79th St. Marina. Thursday would be detox before the weekend with Agni on Biscayne Blvd. for Hot Yoga and then dinner at Omakai Sushi, they do an incredible chefs tasting menu that will leave you stuffed! Friday is a great day to head to One Hotel for lunch and beach time. Last but not least Saturday is a great day for pool parties, the newest one being The Goodtime Hotel, I personally have not experienced this place yet but its on my list , also hoping to run into Pharrell (The Owner) while I’m there 😉
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Community! Hands down the people in my circle have encouraged, supported, loved, and cheered me on since day one. I love Miami its been my home since 2009 and every meaningful connection I’ve made has fueled all of my dreams and ambitions. Weather its been old bosses or coworkers I worked with at salons or the community at Miami Ironside where I opened my salon back in 2017, to all the small business owners I’ve leaned on for advice, or all of the amazing clients and friends who fed my confidence by believing in me. Miami in its colorful chaos keeps me kicking! On a personal note my husband Bradley Flink has provided me with the unconditional love I needed to help me overcome some of the greatest challenges I face in life and for this I’m immeasurably thankful.
