We had the good fortune of connecting with Nikki Sharp and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nikki, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I have three answers as they are all linked together. 1) Taking risks is necessary, even if they don’t work out as you wish 2) Don’t be afraid of “failure” 3) Pivoting your business is necessary.
The reason these are all intertwined in my answer is because it’s what causes a business to be successful, versus those who don’t. I have had an enormous amount of what I have called “failures” in my career and yet, with each one I’ve learned a lesson. These didn’t happen without taking a risk and doing something that someone else was too afraid to do. You will not succeed in every single thing you try and I’ve learned this time and time again. Instead of getting attached to what didn’t work, I always the pivot an idea, how I executed it, or modify it completely.
These are all incredibly important to understand when you are doing something new because without testing the waters you won’t know what works and doesn’t. It’s like learning to ride a bike: you never get on the first time and become an Olympian cyclist. You fall, you get up, you try again. It’s no different with success.
In my business, I have learned that sometimes an idea I had, or product like a book I’ve written, was an incredible piece of work at the time, however it came out at the wrong time because of the ever-changing marketplace. Does that mean it was a bad idea? No, it just meant that it either came out too early (you were ahead of the curve and the market wasn’t ready for it), more work was needed to make it excel, or it wasn’t the right thing for your audience.
With each “failure” I’ve gone back to look at what happened, I don’t get caught up in the ‘why me’ mentality, instead I shift focus to what else can I do to serve my audience.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I help women to transform their lives by finding their passion and being fulfilled in life, which ultimately leads to a healthier relationship with food and their body. I do this through 1:1 coaching, group coaching, writing books, sharing my knowledge through podcasts, blogging and by way of my Instagram account (@nikkisharp).
What makes me different than many other coaches is that I’ve been through many challenges in life that allows me to have compassion for clients and know what really works to heal. Having overcome two eating disorders, depression, insomnia, incredible loneliness, and terrible acne for years, I understand what it feels like to have no hope. I didn’t find solace through doctors or therapy, instead I learned how to heal from within and now I get to teach how people to become their own healer, which is the only lasting solution.
I also love travel, food, have studied various forms of nutrition and wellness, am a vegan chef, yoga teacher, meditation expert and through this I’m able to provide people a balanced approach to transforming their life, without any restriction.
Going through all these challenges were not easy but in retrospect they all led me to where I am today and I love what I do for a living and who I get to help. It has been through the self-work that we must all do that I was able to heal myself and now share with others. My brand reflects this as I share personal stories, challenging moments I go through and how I overcome them and give people hope to know that they are not alone in their struggles.
Everything I share is based on the desire to make people know that they can and will heal and with practical tools it is possible to find a zest for life that they may not even have thought possible.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would plan the trip around seeing the beach in a variety of ways, such as hitting South Beach to experience the people and the hustle and bustle, then a sunset dinner at The Deck, along with a boat trip to see Miami from a different perspective. We would hit Mandolin for a delicious Greek dinner, The Setai to get dressed up and people watch while sipping delicious cocktails, and Sugar in Brickell for the sunset. We’d also jump in my car for a day to drive around as this city has some many cute spots to take photos and explore, such as Wynwood Walls, Design District and driving from Miami to South Beach with the water to your left and right.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The people who deserve credit are those who follow me online (my community) because they are the ones who I get to share my knowledge with and they are the people who have pushed me, without knowing it, to always push the boundaries in what I do.
