We had the good fortune of connecting with Emil Silberman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emil, what principle do you value most?
I am true to my Art and what I do. I chose not to depend on anything or anybody when it comes to my Art, especially financial considerations. This is why I got to do the art that I wanted to be doing irrespective of other people’s opinions and expectations.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started doing Art at the age of 3. Ever since my childhood I wanted to capture the inner world of people, their emotions and their true essence in a sculptural form. This Art idea is very different from the popular Art that you see everywhere. I don’t strive for the decorative effect to beautify a given space but rather for the deep emotional content. My Artworks will talk to you and will not just stand there as a decoration. I knew that it is extremely difficult to make this idea financially viable so I became a medical doctor to have complete financial independence. I currently work in an Emergency Room of a hospital in Queens, NY. Along the way I learned that there is a magnificent connection between those 2 worlds- Medicine and Art, one complementing the other.

I want the world to know that everything is possible without compromises . If one wants to be true to themselves and the creative work that they do there are many ways to make right. It may take effort, strength and determination but it is absolutely doable.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The most beautiful place for me is my studio. After that I love the town of Paterson NJ. It used to be very very wealthy industrial city which deteriorated over the years. It has many old factories and industrial spaces where I did most of my installations and site specific Artworks. To me this town is magical with it’s old industrial architecture and waterfalls. I would eat in the local restaurants where many laborers and residents use. I also love the “Grounds for Sculpture ” park in Hamilton, NJ.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Certainly my family and especially my parents and my wife. I also think that many difficulties which I encountered in my life and many immigrations made me who I am today. Lastly the study of spirituality through Kabbalah greatly shaped my views and understandings.
