We had the good fortune of connecting with Francesca Lewis, MD, FAAD and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Francesca, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
As a general and cosmetic Dermatologist, I decided to open Delray Dermatology & Cosmetic Center to provide better Dermatologic care for my community. My goal was a practice where all skin issues could be addressed and patients could feel comfortable coming for both medical and cosmetic concerns. My goal has always been to provide quality, compassionate and comprehensive medical care, as well as to combine safe and effective laser treatments and cosmetic procedures for a natural looking end result.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Growing up in South Florida, I always excelled in school but worked hard to get a position at Vanderbilt University and an honors scholarship. Originally upon entering college I intended to attend Veterinary school, as I had a longstanding love of animals and grew up riding horses in South Florida. I ultimately found my calling in people medicine as opposed to animal medicine and worked hard in college to gain admission to Emory University School of Medicine where I was elected into the prestigious medical honor society, Alpha Omega Alpha. After losing my father my first year of medical school, I threw myself into schoolwork and studying determined to become a Dermatologist. My husband, also physician, and I couples matched (one of the most difficult endeavors for two graduating doctors to tie their applications together matching in the same location) for our residency programs together in Charleston at the Medical University of South Carolina, where I gained my Dermatology foundation. After finishing training, my husband still had two subsequent years of his training, which meant that I worked in several practice in South Carolina, California and ultimately Florida before deciding to open my own practice in the Delray Beach community. Each of these experiences and practice taught be different lessons on how to operate a patient centric medical practice and what was important to me as a physician in my own practice.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
So I would start in Delray Beach and visit the Green Market Downtown on Saturday morning, followed by a shopping stroll down Atlantic Ave and brunch at Brule Bistro. Then cruise to the beach in our golf cart and of course relax under an umbrella with lots of sunscreen. Dinner at The Grove would be my top choice. Sunday I would book a relaxing spa day at the Eau Spa in Manalapan and a late lunch and stroll along Worth Avenue.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My husband has been my biggest supporter throughout our years together in college, medical school and residency. He always encouraged me to do what would make me happy, including opening my own practice. When I suggested the idea, he was the first to jump right into helping me plan the details and come up with a plan even before I concretely formed one myself. I have also made numerous friends in the Delray Beach area of other female medical professionals and business owners that serve as an amazing support network and one of the reasons I love this community so much.
