We had the good fortune of connecting with Sophia Pickett and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Sophia, is there something you believe many others might not?
A piece of conventional advice that I disagree with is that you have to “work until you bleed” to own your own business. Don’t get me wrong, when it is your own business it isn’t just simply getting up, clocking in, and going home when the work day is over. The business follows you home, and there is ALWAYS something more that needs to be done. Between networking, marketing, phone calls, emails, cleaning, and working at the brick and mortar shop (most business owners do it all) one can easily work 80-100 hours a week. Yet, I’ve found that when you are truly passionate about your work, it isn’t about aiming to achieve more and more. Conventional advice would be to always aim for expanding – seeking more clientele, producing more content and revenue. My take on this is to aim for exploration. When you push yourself too hard to produce, you are turning off your creativity and turning on your “go mode.” In this mode there is no growth, it’s just more of the same. Your clients will notice when you are burnt out, your products become redundant, you’re offering more but it’s more of the same, and they will seek someone with fresher energy. Do what keeps you fresh, take the breaks you need, and don’t believe that you need to break your back to be successful because the right people will be loyal and follow and support you as long as you keep giving them more of what caused them to originally fall in love with your work.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My physical journey was easy, yet the internal battle was the toughest I’ve ever had to endure. My life’s passion is helping individuals grow, face their fears, and return to their hearts and intuition. I do this through surf coaching, theta and reiki energy healing, yoga and meditation, as well as body work and massage therapy. When I first decided to open my own yoga and surf school at a physical studio, it seemed higher power was backing me, and sent me everything I needed. It was one of those experiences where everything just fell into place once I took the first step in the right direction. When I first started I had 3 other jobs at restaurants, and was only running my practice during the day. I grew up with a financial advisor father, who, out of love and concern, spent his days convincing me that my passions could never carry me financially. This is where the internal battle overpowered me at times, causing me to burn myself out and give more energy to my other jobs than to my dream. I often wrote it off as a fun hobby, never a career. I doubted myself as I listened to an older generation express their fears of instability and the unknown. The day I put full faith in my practice, stopped listening to the naysayers, cancelled my plan b and decided to become a full time pursuant of my passion, my life took a turn for the absolute best. I want the world to know that once they take their first step with good intentions and faith, everything will line up, but “if you have a plan b it is just because you don’t believe in your plan a.”
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Sebastian FL is a small city with wonderful views, preserves and beaches. The best experience would be to take a surf lesson, yoga class and receive a massage from Sophlow Yoga. (;
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My teachers deserve all the recognition in my success as a business owner and teacher. They taught me that energy is everything, and gave me the tools to shift my own in order to help others in their own consciousness evolution. I’ve been taught to dream big, and thanks to the many mentors on my journey including Peter Kaaperbol and Raj Balkaran, I haven’t stopped dreaming.
