We had the good fortune of connecting with Katherine Dorn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katherine, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I decided to pursue an artistic career because that’s the only thing I can possibly imagine I would be great at but also really really enjoy doing! I have always love to paint and draw since I was a little girl and I have carried that painting on over into my make up artist career Very fluidly. I see the human face as a canvas in which to enhance your best features. I believe that there is a way to do make up in which each client feels authentically their best self possible! I also love that I’m able to share my positivity, knowledge, and good vibes with every client because sometimes people just need an ear to listen And a word of support or encouragement. My career fulfills a lot for me I very much enjoy traveling and meeting new people and getting to do different types of make up artistry, it is a perfect match for me!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m very proud of where I’m at in my career I still feel that I have a long ways to go but it does amaze me the things that I have been able to achieve. I’ve been able to do some celebrities and that is pretty cool but honestly my favorite part of my job is every day people looking in the mirror when I’m done and their eyes lighting up in the smile that comes to their face when you could tell they just feels so wonderful from the inside out! I love being able to Help someone may be trying their day around if they’ve got a lot on their mind or had a rough start sometimes some words of encouragement or a shoulder to lean on and a little bit of lipstick can go along way for a girl! It was definitely not easy my journey on my career I had to do many years of unpaid work long hours long commutes cleaning 1 million make up brushes being told now 1 million times before I was told yes but still continuing every day hauling all my make up stuff in and out of the city every day back-and-forth to upstate State of New York every dayI’m a very firm believer that you could do anything in the whole wide world as long as you don’t give up and be persistent.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
So I live in Brooklyn and I love the cute neighborhood spots in Bushwick that I live near so I will probably bring my friend to one of those first. Some of my favorites are a Tres Jolie Cafe, and Salud in my block. Another one of my absolute favorite places to bring people is to Little Italy especially in September during San Gennero. Chinatown is also a great spot if you have someone that’s looking for gifts or even one of my favorite jewelers is in Chinatown and I get some great gold for good prices! Lol I once had a “date” walking over the Williamsburg Bridge lol It was a weird date but a beautiful walk! Are usually try to stay away from Times Square just because it’s over priced and so many people but most people like to stop there if they haven’t been to New York City it is amazing energy and a sight to see.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are so very many people that I have learned from along the way in my career so far. I would definitely like to thank Dan Doyle for planting the seed in my mind that I could be a make up artist for a modeling agency. I thank my parents for helping me and supporting me as always and giving me opportunity to attend the best makeup school in NYC, Makeup Designory in 2009. The school was amazing and I learned a lot from all of my teachers there and this really pushed me straight into the make up industry that I am still in almost 14 years later. I would also like to thank All of my Amazing coworkers at Midtown’s Pierre Michel Salon Which I have been the head make up artist at for the past eight years. I also would like to thank Lauren Paglionito of LRNBeauty in NYC For bringing me on as a bridal make up artist but then bringing me in to work in your studio. I would like to thank Julie Occhino of Julie Occhino Luxury Beauty for the opportunities to do destination weddings all over the stare of NY!
I also would like to thank all the people who have sat in my chair and I’ve let me practice on them over the years or sit and be a model for me I appreciate every single one of you. And lastly if I forgot anyone I apologize but I really appreciate the people that maybe didn’t think that I could get to this point those people gave me motivation to never stop and prove them wrong!
