We had the good fortune of connecting with Jose Valdes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jose, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I wanted more freedom and knew that in my work situation at the time I was at the top of what I could achieve where I was. Something had to change, I was confident in my technical abilities and knew I could sell so I went for it. Honestly the thought of being trapped in what I was doing at the time forever was scary I mean so early on to accept your gonna make x amount of money week after week with no possibility to make more and on top of that having to be on someone else’s schedule, it just made less and less sense not to make the move.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I’m the owner and proprietor of Phoenix pool and spa in Miami Florida. We are a swimming pool consultant, service & repair contractor, and design outfit. With 20 years of experience in the industry I’ve been lucky enough to see some really incredible things along the way. I’ve also worked in the 3 largest markets for swimming pools in the country; Florida, Texas, and California. This has really helped me amass a wealth of knowledge and information that set me apart from my competitors, I pride myself on the ability to handle issues others cant. Its not uncommon for me to come out to a property where several other companies have already been, but after me wont be back. I specialize in automated, infinity edge, commercial, and multi level multi basin swimming pools. This is a very specialized and niche market, which requires a professional approach. I also am really big on sharing information and motivating my peers, I have trained several people who have turned what may have been just a job into a career. This is one of the most personally rewarding things I have had the opportunity of experiencing. I’m continually making an effort to educate myself and stay current with what’s available, like the everything under the sun expo which we attend yearly to take advantage of classes offered and the networking opportunities with different manufactures and service providers. Having and sharing all of this information has been crucial to getting to where I am professionally. All of the individuals who I have trained, shared information with, or executed joint projects with is essentially a mini network of professionals where all the jobs are pretty much handled within the group. Collectively this has really helped us all move our prospective business forward. As for my brand and story its simple my story is a mix of “started from the bottom” and “late nights and early mornings” nothing here was given and I’ve worked and earned everything I have. My brand is focused on an ultra high end residential client, I offer a different level of service from your average pool guy. Our boutique size allows us to offer a more personalized experience where services can be tailored to a clients specific needs, while allowing us to maintain an unparalleled quality of service.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
A week long trip down here would be memorable to say the least. I would start out with a trip out to the big cypress national preserve for a day of off-road fun and exploration. We would cruise through the park in a side by side to see the camps and airports that are still there from before the area became a national park. Its super impressive and the opportunity to see native wild life in its natural setting is amazing. On the way back in we have to make a stop at the pit bbq on sw 8 st a Miami staple. A day trip to the keys also cant be left out of the itinerary, the keys has a ton of stuff to see but if you want to make memories its hard to beat a stop at bud and marys to feed the tarpon. This will definitely give you story to tell. Our next day would start with breakfast at La carreta on bird rd, this place combines traditional Cuban food with the atmosphere to match. From there we would head to the c100 canal in South Miami for a day of urban peacock bass fishing. This is little known but it has a ton of action and is definitely a great time. At the end of the day we could wrap up with dinner at café oggi in north bay village, they serve the best Italian food in the city. Next day run out to take an airboat tour, if you haven’t treated yourself to one you should. Head back in and do lunch at Substantial subs on nw 57 ave Then head over to warriors gun range for a fun experience. (they rent automatic weapons here and its hard not leave with a smile). I would spend the rest of my time at the beach hanging out and enjoying the vibe. Probably also rent some slingshots to ride around in
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My grandmother, no matter how crazy of an idea or unpopular of an opinion she may not always agree but is always supportive and understanding. She has always been in my corner. When I need someone’s opinion I like to bounce things off of her and get a different viewpoint. She’s defiantly one of the strongest people I know.
