Meet Derrick Brownie | Social Media Strategist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Derrick Brownie and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Derrick, do you disagree with some advice that is more or less universally accepted?
The phrase “say yes to everything”. I’m extremely selective about everything. A business woman once said “show me your closest friends and I will know exactly who you are.” This has stuck with me and I apply it to every aspect of my life. I’m a firm believer in gaining new experiences, but I always have a plan and rarely ever do something on a whim.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a lifestyle/fashion photographer but I don’t like to create images that are like everyone else. I have a broad imagination and learned how to use photoshop to bring that to life. During the pandemic in May 2020, I really delved more into this and made one of my favorite, dare I say “frame worthy” photos. What excites me about what I do is that the social media space is shifting toward video and I’m learning 3D modeling to continue bringing my ideas to life.
I got to where I am now by a lot of practice and patience. I’m a self taught photographer and editor. It was not easy, but I enjoyed the process of learning. I also learned that I learn best with hands-on work.
If I had to pick one thing I wanted people to know about my brand or story it would be that I strive for uniqueness.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Indiana doesn’t offer a lot of experiences, but we do have restaurants. A lot of them.
Monday – Visit the art museum, Newfields, lunch at The Eagle on Mass Ave
Tuesday – Shopping at the Fashion Mall
Wednesday – Visit downtown Indianapolis landmarks with lunch at Nesso downtown
Thursday – Dinner at Bucca Di Beppo
Friday – Visit The Garage at Bottleworks

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My brother is one of my biggest supporters. He’s always available to provide feedback and eager to help when he can.
