We had the good fortune of connecting with Javornie Brathwaite and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Javornie, what’s the most important lesson your business/career has taught you?
Of all the lessons that are attributed with starting your own business/career that you can learn I feel Patience is the most important, at least for me it has. As Cliché as it may sound patience to me is one of the most vital and integral lessons that starting anything on your own may teach you. Having Patience within your pursuit of success is what can allow you to persevere through all the adversity that is associated with starting something of your own. At a young age we are conditioned to expect results within a set time frame. You study and take a test you get the results the next day, you get good grades you get rewarded, you get through 4 years of school you graduate, you do x-number of years to get your masters etc. etc. But what happens when you don’t have a time frame for the results you seek? How do you know what your doing is working and leading to something when you don’t have a time frame for the success your pursuing? do you move on to something else if what your doing hasn’t yielded the results you’ve wanted in years? Those are the questions that start to form in your head when you’re taking a path without any time frame on the results. That’s why Patience has been the most important lesson I’ve learned; without it I would’ve given up or tried to do something else that I wouldn’t have been as passionate about all for the sake of seeing results quicker, which still wouldn’t have guaranteed the results anyways. Self Confidence and belief in my abilities is something I’ve always had but the level of patience I have now is something I’ve learned through this new journey. The patience and belief that the hard work you’re putting in now will yield results whether it be tomorrow or 10 years down the line, I have the patience and belief to keep pushing and working hard to get the results I dream of. Perusing this path has taught me that its ok to acknowledge and celebrate the small Victories along the way and that if you have the patience and trust in YOUR process everything will work itself out.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am a Creator. I allow individuals to express themselves by using art to create creative clothing and footwear. Whether it be making their ideas into reality or turning my own ideas into reality for others to wear. Creative expression is a form of freedom and an expression of yourself for others to consume. I feel what separates me from others is by firmly being ME. Sometimes people try too hard or overthink trying to be different but as long as your doing what you want and doing it with your own ideas your going to be different because your ideas are shaped by the unique experiences of your life . My Ideas and creativity has been shaped over the many experiences I’ve had in my life growing up here in Miami.

I am most proud of the growth I’ve been able to see in not only my work, but also the growth in this small community of supporters that I have, Its a great feeling seeing people that you’ve never met become fans of your work and feel comfortable sharing ideas they have or ideas they’d love to see me do. I’ve gotten to this point by good old fashion hard work. Countless hours working on my craft, I take what I do seriously and approach it with a level of focus that’s required to level up within any field. Ive also tried to be as transparent as possible and allow people to see my process on how I go about creating what I create. It wasnt easy to get to this point, even though the journey isn’t finished but no dream worth fighting for is easy and they all come with challenges but ive learned that if you want something no challenge is too challenging to overcome. I believe my will to succeed is stronger than any obstacles that may come my way and as long as you have that mindset you can battle through anything.

In the end what I want the world to know about my story and brand is that a kid from Overtown in Miami was able to leave an impact that’ll echo through eternity long after my time here is up. I want them to know that I’m a firm believer that if you look good you’ll feel good and that anything you decide to wear or create as long as you think its amazing than that’s all that matters. The one opinion that holds the most weight is your own, have confidence in your choices.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Oh that’s easy, The first area id take them to hands down is Wynwood. From the art to the exposure of the different cultures in Miami, I feel it’s the perfect spot to show someone the versatility of the city. From shops that have work from local artists to unique restaurants, to different bars and clubs that show the many cultures and flavors of Miami. I feel just walking around that area for a visitor would be a blast because I feel Wynwood has a little bit of something for everyone. If I Had to do a little tour with someone for a weeklong trip I’d take them to Lincoln road just to get a little bit of the South Beach experience in their system early in the week. Restaurants in that area that offer an amazing experience are Juuvia and Chotto Matte, Thank me later. Then later towards the weekend take them to eat and drink in the Wynwood and Brickell area. I feel an Itinerary involving all of these areas would satisfy any visitors touring palette that would love to get a complete experience of everything that is Miami, from the touristy upscale side to the real melting pot mixture of culture and people that makes this city unique.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There is always a group behind you when you are pursuing success in whatever it is you do, from just simple support to someone providing advice and mentorship. As cliché as it is I want to shoutout my family, from my Mom, Dad, sisters and brothers they’ve supported my Ideas no matter how strange and out of the box they may have been. My best friends Sheena and Canaan have also played a huge role in me getting to where I’m at now through their support and always making sure I have my head on straight when things get a little stressful and hectic. Sheena has been a huge help when I need a helping hand in my little shoe factory, so in a sense she’s the real MVP. But in general I am grateful for the support I’ve received from others in my life because I can acknowledge how rare it is for others to receive that level of support from family and friends. So shout outs to them and everyone else out there that’s trying to help and support others, it goes a long way.
