Meet Michelle Cortes | Skincare Specialist and Sugarist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Michelle Cortes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Michelle, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I’ve always felt destined to be an Entrepeneur. When I fully committed to skincare and sugaring hair removal, I knew eventually I would start my own business in that field. When the opportunity arose, I didn’t hesitate because everything felt right.

Many thoughts went through my mind about starting my business but the main one was that I’d be able to take care of my clients how I want too, with no restrictions. That excited me! But more so I’d be putting my creative energy into my own. I wanted to be able to offer a product or a service that fitted my vision, building my company based on my own ideas. This is why I came up with the name Skin Genesis. Genesis meaning “the beginning.” I want people to understand the fundamentals of their skin, to know their skin in order to treat it correctly. I think that’s the only way the “Why” and “How” questions can be answered. My clients deserve that! Skincare can be so complicated so it’s very important to have someone who’s willing to go through the process step by step for optimal results.

Admittedly, I caught myself having negative thoughts. I was anxious about the uncertainties and doubted myself at times because I had so much to learn and it was a big transition for me, but I’ve never put limitations on myself, and I reminded myself constantly that I’d be in control of my own success. My hard work and drive would help me reap the rewards and keep me motivated to make each day count. I also thought I’d finally have a more flexible lifestyle and schedule to make time for self-care and to do things that keep me grounded. Staying in the right frame of mind was the steppingstone to my success.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What you are most proud of or excited about.

I have a lot to be proud and excited about. I came to the US from a small island in the Caribbean called St. Lucia, and did not know which direction to go. The cultural shock was overwhelming, but I knew because I’ve always had hunger for success that I would make something great out of my life.

I’m proud of myself for overcoming so much and not putting limitations on myself. I’m proud of myself for staying dedicated to my goals and not giving up. I’m proud of myself for getting out of my comfort zone and exploring the endless opportunities presented to me and I’m proud of the company I’ve built to help women and men gain their confidence through their skin.

I am excited to see my business grow. I have so many ideas festering in my mind the I know my current and future clients are going to love.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There’s so much to do in Florida. If my best friend was visiting for a week, I would take them kayaking or paddle boarding at the Kings Landing to enjoy a fun adventure along the clear waters of the spring. Then, I’d take them to City Walk. There are so many amazing things to get involved in. There are a variety of restaurants and would probably take them to Bob Marley’s after to enjoy some reggae, my kind of music!!

I would also take them berry picking or even wine tasting in Lake County, Fl. Just for a different scene from the city.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have so many amazing people to be grateful for. People who have supported me in every which way possible throughout this journey.

At first, I thought, “I got this,” and wouldn’t need anyone else’s input because I felt I had enough experience in skincare and business to do it alone, but you truly don’t know until you have a support system who are more excited for you than you are for yourself. To have a circle of genuine people who uplift, mentor and motivate constantly with true love and positive intent is truly a blessing.

My family, my friends, my husband and all the beauty professionals I have developed close relationships with along the way deserve this moment right here because as much as I am confident in myself, I could not have done it without having them at my side.
