We had the good fortune of connecting with Annette Newman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Annette, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe that we have to be willing to take risks in order to be truly successful and build confidence in ourselves. With risks comes rewards. When I hung my shingles over eleven years ago right after passing the bar exam, it was high stakes risks for me, because I had no first-hand experience working for a law firm as an attorney. Practicing law was a fourth career for me. I relied heavily on my work experience in the human resources field, in management and administrative positions as well as my formal education to guide me along the way as I learned how to manage a law firm, litigate legal claims in court and the overall practice of running a law firm. I took a risk when I joined the military as a single mother and while working a full-time job, taking college courses part-time. It was very difficult, but I truly believe I would not be as successful as I am today, having managed a successful law practice for over eleven years. I encourage everyone to take risks. Ask God for guidance, believe in yourself, put your plan together, do the hard work and you will be successful in whatever you want to do in life.
What should our readers know about your business?
I am the founder of the the Law Office of Annette Newman, PLLC. My firm is located at 759 SW Federal Highway, Suite 201H, Stuart, Florida 34994 (772) 348-2525. Our website is equalemploymentattorney.com. I have been in business in Florida since 2011. My primary practice area is labor and employment law. I also offer mediation services and Human Resources services.
I opened the doors to my law firm in 2011 in Fort Lauderdale, where I practiced until I relocated to Stuart, Florida in 2018. What sets my firm apart from other firms is the personal service I provide to my clients. I am a solo practitioner and offer my clients a more personalized experience than many larger firms can provide. When clients call my office, they are usually anxious to obtain answers to pressing legal matters they are dealing with. I personally return every caller’s phone call quickly and discuss their concerns with them. I truly care about every customer who calls my office and during our discussions, I explain what their legal rights are so they can make informed decisions about what options they have to resolve their issues.
I’m most proud of accomplishing my goals after very humble beginnings and struggles throughout my lifetime. I grew up very poor in foster care, after my mother passed away when I was only one year old. I went through being a single mother, after being physically abused by my ex-husband, struggling with three children, while working full-time and taking college classes part-time. But despite a tough beginning and all of the obstacles I faced, I have accomplished so much that I’m proud of. I credit my religious upbringing and deep spiritual relationship with God for my strength as well as my success.
I’m most proud of my three daughters, who are all college graduates and successful business women themselves. My daughters have travelled all over the world; one has her own clothing line and makes over six figures a year. Two have graduate degrees and one is an educator at a public elementary school. They are all beautiful, successful “bosses” who I am so proud of.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Whenever I have visitors, they always want to head straight to South Beach or anywhere there are beaches. So that’s where we go. I also like to go to anywhere there’s live music. In Port Saint Lucie, the town I live in, they have lots of good restaurants that offer live entertainment and the beaches here are really beautiful. Hollywood Beach in Fort Lauderdale is one of my favorite beaches to stroll up and down the boardwalk and grab an ice cream cone along the way.
Wet Willies, HardRock and downtown Miami are some popular spots and riding the BrightLine Train is a must!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to give a Shoutout to my three daughters. They are my biggest cheerleaders and supporters. I also have to give a shoutout to my colleagues in the legal community who send me referrals and are always ready to show their support whenever I need anything.
