We had the good fortune of connecting with Aubyn Lewis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Aubyn, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I currently have three separate ventures that all grew from my passions.

1) I started Lion Art Design Studio as a means to pay for college – I would create flyers for campus parties and design project covers and portfolios for fellow students and used that money to help pay my tuition. This eventually lead to me picking up web design, and coupled with my marketing degree, I offer customers the full marketing agency experience (design, paid advertising, SEO, etc in a one-stop-shop.

2] BlackASF Clothing – I started this venture 2 years ago. I was looking for a Juneteenth T-Shirt and could not find one, so I decided to make my own and have it printed. It received rave reviews from friends and strangers, so the idea of starting a clothing company that catored to the Black experience and celebrate black culture was born. I choose the name BlackASF because it perfectly embodied what it meant to be unapologetically Black in a space that doesn’t have many persons who look like me.

3} Last but not least is Meal Prep King USA – I’m that guy who likes to take pictures of his food and post them on IG (cheesy yes I know) So, I would post pictures of my meal preps for the week and people started commenting on how good the food looked and that I should start selling. So, I did just that. Now I create healthy yet tasty meals that are cooked fresh and delivered on Sundays in Broward, Dade, and Palm Beach.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

If you ask me I’ll tell you that I love my three ventures equally. But. as any parent with multiple children, there is a favorite. That just happens to be my graphic design work. I find the thing that sets me apart from most designers is the fact that I am also a trained marketer. I understand the concept of advertising from both an artistic and analytical perspective. I know what imagery will not only look good but also lead to tangible actions by the viewer. This skill set has allowed me to excel in marketing departments of both large and small companies and eventually on my own.

Along the way there were challenges, Hopscotching between two countries, 11 different schools, and parents with completely different parenting styles was a bit of a challenge, to say the least. Starting off life on my own at 17 was also no walk in the park, but I now realized back then that those adversities were just pressure that would either cause me to burst or shape me into a diamond. Thankfully it was the latter.

Along the way I learned to be like water and adapt to my surroundings, I learned to be accepting of people from different cultures and walks of life and I learned to never take a no from someone who couldn’t give you a yes in the first place.

Morgan Freeman has a line in the Shawnk redemption where his character Redd says ” Get busy living or get busy dying” This has been the moniker by which I have chosen to live this one life that I’ve been blessed with. That is what I want people to take from any interaction with me is that he loves life and all the ying and yang that comes with it.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

I’m a total water junkie, so anyone visiting South Florida would definitely get dragged with me to the beach. I always pack the cooler with some RedStripe Beer and make a stop at Publix to get a Jerk Turkey Sub to take along with me. I also love fishing, so we would go down by A1A to see if we can catch our dinner, or at least pretend to. I would also take them on a water taxi ride to see the waterfront homes in Fort Lauderdale.

We would do brunch at Just Spoons – best scrambles and french toast in Broward. We would hit Las Olas to do some people-watching and stop at a sidewalk cafe for some grub.

On Tuesday we would head to Tatts and Tacos for #TacoTuesday where we would eat way too much elote’ and pass out

On Friday night we are headed to Lalloos in North Lauderdale, the Best live music and Caribbean party experience in the city.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

There is a song that goes “No man is an island, no man stands alone” This resonates with me as I think back on all the people who have had a positive impact on my life and have pushed me into pursuing my goals and passions. Can I narrow it down to one? Hmm, that would be a near-impossible task, so I won’t. There are however three folks who definitely gave me a few shoves in the right direction over the years that I would like to acknowledge.

A special “Big up” to my Mother and Grandmother (fun fact both are named Patricia). They taught me the fundamentals of cooking and fueled a love for the culinary arts from a young age. My mom even allowed me to draw on the walls of my bedroom (as much as I know it killed her inside to see her house defaced)

Thanks to my college friend Tarrik who gave me my 1st bootleg copy of Photoshop (that started the whole design journey) That one gesture lead to a lifetime of design work that has truly been my life’s passion.
