We had the good fortune of connecting with Lauren Toney and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Lauren, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am from Plantation, Florida.. the suburbs. I was primarily raised by my grandmother. My background and upbringing impacted me tremendously because I knew early on what I didn’t want to be. My life experiences pushed me to keep going to accomplish my goals. My upbringing made me have no choice, but to be successful.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a radiation therapist, which most people surprisingly don’t know what that is. When I tell people I’m a radiation therapist they think I do chemo therapy. However, I don’t. I administer radiation to cancer patients to cure their cancer. I’ve been a radiation therapist for 5 years now. It was not easy at all, school was quite brutal. I was sleep deprived, burned out, and questioned if I wanted to really pursue radiation therapy school. They say nothing in life worth it comes easy, that’s definitely true when it comes to radiation therapy school. I managed to overcome challenges by keeping my faith in God, praying, using my son as motivation and keeping myself focused on the end goal. Helping to change the lives of many people. Along the way I learned you have to work hard for what you want and keep faith. No matter your background or where you come from. Who raised you or who was absent in your life. You can do everything your heart desires and become successful. You are your biggest cheerleader, overcome those obstacles and remain positive. I want the world to know that I worked hard to get to where I am today and I’m going to continue to work hard. I am a woman that wears many hats. I have my podcast that I recently started called “The Traveled Black Girl” where I talk about this journey of life, learning to heal, learning self worth, self care, dating tips, trip and restaurants recommendations. I also model as well and I will be walking in New York fashion week February 12th, I’m super excited!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I actually live in Fort Lauderdale, however I prefer to hang out in Miami. First we would go to brunch at Victory & have a few drinks, shrimp and grits and their amazing French toast. Then we would have a spa and beach day at the Setai. After the spa we would go to super blue Miami and see the really cool art experience. Lastly, we would go to the blue martini and dance the night away. In my view, some of the most fun experiences, places, and things to check out are definitely wynwood. Wynwood is super cool and it’s so much to do. From the farmers market, art, amazing restaurants, and a bunch of places to hangout.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my grandmother. Throughout my life she’s been there for me. Encouraging me, lifting me up, supplying me with knowledge. She’s my major support system and helps me out tremendously with my son. Especially when I was in radiation therapy school, sleep deprived and burned out from so much studying. Without her, I honestly don’t know where I would be.
