Meet Jean Phillipe | Registered nurse and Part-Time photographer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jean Phillipe and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jean, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
I think one of the most important things that people on the outside don’t know about Photography is there is so much that goes into the preparation, the process of taking the pictures and then most importantly the retouching at the end. Really nice photography, weather it be editorial or wedding, for the most part is planned out and then once the shot is taken it has to be retouched. That alone could take as much as a couple of hours per photo. We live in a time now where everyone wants photos fast and immediate but really good pictures take time to create

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I worked as a licensed practical nurse in many different areas (home health, hospice care, Kid Care, and the jail system). I recently became a registered nurse last year. So right now I’m balancing working a full-time nursing career with pursuing my passion in Photography.
It took me a while to become a registered nurse. Even after I passed and completed the program I failed my first attempt at the RN exam. I was a little discouraged at first but through better preparation I was able to pass with flying colors on the second attempt.
My brand photography is colorful, natural, and should tell a story. I feel all those components are necessary when trying to give the person looking at the photo a look into the persons life.
I love colors, I love photos that tell a story. Whenever I’m taking pictures of somebody I want it to look as natural as possible, nothing forced. So I take my time with posing, with setting up.
Photos capture a moment in time that will never ever happen again. That’s the power of the photograph.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
That would have to be Paris France. I don’t think we could see everything in a day but if I had to plan out an itinerary. Breakfast at one of the many local restaurants. Then a tour to the Eiffel Tower and other major landmarks. The next day the Lourve. This will take a day. Then the Palace of Versailles. Finish off the week with a trip to the county side to a winery.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I think the people that I have to thank the most are my family and church family. My family because they always believed in my talent and my church family because that’s where the gift was sparked.
I was tasked many times with creating graphics, shooting video and taking pictures. They saw that I had a knack for it and gave me the opportunity to exercise that talent. For example if I was asked to take a photo I would always organize everyone in such a way that they would be seen. It was just something that seemed obvious. Although people in the photo sometimes were like “just take the picture“
I always took a little time to organize the shot. And then after a while they just came to expect that for me whenever I was taking a picture and because of that they just gave me the camera whenever a picture had to be taken if we were out somewhere. That’s just one of many examples.
