Meet Michael Haddix | CEO of Scout and Former Division 1 Basketball Player

We had the good fortune of connecting with Michael Haddix and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Michael, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
For me, it was about building what I wanted to see in the world. I did not know much about investing in high school or college, but when I moved to New York City, it was everywhere. I also quickly noticed that the earlier someone invested, the bigger impact it could have. Access to information is a big factor in making these decisions, so I created Scout. I wanted to blend teaching and action and help everyone create the financial future they wanted through investing, no matter their background.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I started Scout about 3 years ago. I was a former college athlete and went to Columbia Business School. When I got there, I quickly noticed that a big portion of success is driven by access. I went on to work on Wall Street and then with professional athletes, but I always wanted more. I wanted to take lessons that I was fortunate enough to get and share them with the world, but not just through teaching, but by helping people act. Scout helps people invest in things they care about and build their financial future. It’s driven by my experiences and ones that so many of us had: how do I invest if I don’t know how or don’t think I have enough to get started. Getting to where we are now wasn’t easy. We heard plenty of Nos or candidly, plenty of let me get back you with no response. Through it all, we knew we had something special. We also knew we did not need everyone to care because the ones that did, would help us get to where we needed to be. We were able to raise ~3M for Scout and will be coming to you soon!
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I have always been a South Beach guy, I know things are changing, but it brings back memories. I am also someone who likes good food and the crowds. I like the One hotel or the Delano for a drink and Joe’s Stone crab or Prime 112 for a bite. I have been enjoying Brickell lately though and love that area as well.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My first college basketball coach, Rob Lanier.. He always helped us look at the bigger picture and pushed us to develop in ways outside of sports. He helped me to spark my curiosity and confidence.
