We had the good fortune of connecting with Alane Gianetti and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alane, what role has risk played in your life or career?
If you look up the word “risk” in the dictionary, most of the definitions have to do with loss or potential harm and they tend to give the word a negative connotation. However, when I think about risk, I like to think about what there is to gain rather than what there is to lose. In my opinion, taking risks is a necessary action in order to grow, and I can say for certain that I wouldn’t be where I am today if I didn’t take risks along the way.

I started my calligraphy business while working a 9-5 corporate job in New York City. I slowly grew my business over 2.5 years and saved all of my pennies. In the spring of 2018, I begin playing with the idea of leaving my corporate job to pursure my business full-time. Quitting a stable job with a steady paycheck and benefits was no doubt a huge risk. But when presented with the risk, I focused on everything there was to gain: I could live a more fulfilled life by doing something I was passionate about, I could create art every single day, I could have unlimited income potential, and I could be my own boss and set my own schedule. To me, all of those things were well worth taking the risk and I’m so glad I did!

Taking risks pushes us out of our comfort zones. It requires us to learn new things, be open to new opportunities, and get uncomfortable. And I truly believe that getting uncomfortable is the only way we grow. Ever since I left my corporate job, taking risks has become a part of everyday life and they come in all shapes and sizes. It can be something as simple as putting my art out into the world or something bigger like investing money in my own personal development or my business. Regardles of the risk, I always think about how taking that risk can benefit future me.

If there ever comes a day when I stop taking risks, it means I’ve stopped growing. As a person who strives to be the very best version of myself and is always looking to grow, I know that I will live a life that’s filled with risk-taking!

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’m an artist specializing in modern calligraphy and design for weddings, and I love using my creative abilities to capture and share people’s love stories. I started practicing calligraphy as a hobby in 2013 and had no idea at that time that it would be the start of my entrepreneurial journey. I quickly fell in love with the art and once I began working with couples on their wedding details, I realized how much I enjoy creating a connection with the people I serve.

Over the years, I’ve developed my own style of writing and, even though it changes and evolves, I love that my clients know when they see a “Write Pretty for Me” piece! Bringing uniqueness and authenticity into my work is my top priority. I want the pieces I create to not only reflect my talents and individual style, but I also want them to reflect my couples’ personalities and showcase aspects of their love story. My goal is to create something that’s more than just pretty writing. I strive to create signage and stationery pieces that are personal, intentional, and will become keepsakes that my couples cherish for a lifetime.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’ve lived in Hoboken, NJ for 9 years and it truly feels like home. What I love most about Hoboken is that even though it’s a city, it has a friendly neighborhood feel. I’ve made so many business and personal connections here and it’s easy to walk out the door and run into a friendly face! If my best friend was visiting, I’d take her to all of my favorite local spots. We’d sign up for a Tramp class at Jane Do, then get bagels from JP’s. She’d join me on a walk with my dog to my favorite coffee spot, Mojo, and then we’d stroll to Church Square Dog Park. We’d have a wine night at Grand Vin and sip espresso martinis at La Boheme (both of which have great live music!). Dinner at Antique Bar is a must! I’d be sure to take her up to the water, which has the best views of Manhattan, we’d get the Thursday special sandwich at Fiore’s, and we’d track down the Tastebuds taco truck. The week wouldn’t be complete without some local shopping at Little City Books, Washington General and Margo Market.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First and foremost, I have to shoutout my parents for always encouraging me to go after my dreams, even if they aren’t “conventional.” Their endless love and support have given me the strength and courage needed to always take risks. I also want to shoutout my boyfriend, who always believes in me, even when I’m struggling to believe in myself. I want to shoutout the community of creative entreprenuers I’ve met on this journey – they always remind me that even as a solo-entreprenuer, I’m never really alone. And last, but certainly not least, I’m sending a huge shoutout to all of the clients I’ve had the honor of serving over the past 6 years – without them believing in me, supporting me and trusting me with their most special moments, I wouldn’t have the business or life that I have today!
