We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayla Flores and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kayla, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Ever since I was a little girl I was always starting businesses. The first one I remember was going to the dollar store, buying dog and cat bowls and with sharpies customizing them for my clients and when I say clients I mean my parents and grandparents. I must say they had the best animal bowls in the neighborhood (until the sharpie wore off that is). With that being said I knew owning my own business wasn’t a question of if but when. As I got older and started doing hair and makeup I saw how much it changes people. I wanted to create a salon culture that encourages women and makes them feel beautiful from the inside out. I guess you can say my thought process when starting my own business was to create business that blesses my family and my clients.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a hair and makeup artist and I specialize in bridal hair and makeup. I love my craft and over the years I have perfected bridal makeup that looks natural and skin like plus lasts all day long! For hair I have perfected my boho bridal hair styles that my brides love. There are many hair and makeup artists all over and you really need to constantly grow and change your craft in order to stand out above the rest! This is a very tough industry to be apart of and when I started I was really the only makeup artist in the area that did hair too. That is what really set me apart, brides wanted someone who did everything for them and the less people they had to hire the better. So I ran with it, I studied and became better at both so I was more valuable than my competitor. I have learned along the way that there is plenty of business for everyone and not everyone is going to like you and thats OKAY. I love that I get to refer business to other talented artist around me, I want to build a strong community of respect and appreciation for each other, working together is much more powerful than division.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take my friend out to some amazing restaurants: Old Florida Coffee Co. in downtown Ft. Pierce for breakfast, Beach Bowl in downtown Ft Pierce for a smoothie or açaí bowl, Taco Dive in downtown for some awesome tacos or nachos and then Kyle G’s Oyster Bar for drinks and dinner. For some shopping or excursions I would take them to the Ax Lounge for some fun ax throwing, down to the pier to feed some fish, Chaney’s Flower shop for some beautiful arrangements and home decor shopping, Jojo and Co. for some apparel and jewelry and then we would finish the week with massages from Danielle at Drift Away Massage. Of course we would visit the beach and enjoy catching up by the pool with all of our family and friends.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My family for always being my first clients and customers. Even when I was bad and first starting off my mom and sisters always supported and encouraged me. My faith and knowing God has given me these desires for a reason and using them to bless others is my main driving force. I am also so thankful for a husband that always encourages my crazy ideas. He is my best friend and my most amazing and supportive teammate. I couldn’t do it without these amazing people.
