We had the good fortune of connecting with Abby Ballin and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Abby, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind my success is persistence. I believe this to be true for any line of work, especially during these uncertain times. My Father always tells me “stay at the table” and this advice really stuck with me.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My main objective is to bring more beauty into the world. To create a judgment free space for those to feel free to express themselves and be vulnerable. For me there is nothing more beautiful than an individual standing in their truth.
I am the artist I am today merely because of my fascination with people and their stories. I love connecting to people and learning from them. It’s not easy being an artist and getting to a point where I was able to do it professionally has been a long process and still involves me working with and for others. I think sometimes people forget that factor, that art isn’t just about you and what you want to express. I am able to create the art I want in the way I want only because at one point I helped another create theirs. Honestly I love viewing art, and life for that matter, in that way….a give and take.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Only being in South Florida for a few years now there is still so much I have yet to explore. What I have discovered though is some of my favorite beaches are actually further north outside of Miami, and there are a few nice parks where you can go kayaking which is one of my favorite activities to do. When I’m up in West Palm Beach my favorite restaurant is Hullabaloo @hullabaloowpb on clematis st., they have amazing craft cocktails made by the best bartender in all WPB Joey Brader and often have local musicians serenading you throughout the week which is always a good vibe. My favorite restaurant in ALL of Miami though is a bit off the beaten track, and that’s Pinch Kitchen @pinchmiami! The ingredients are always fresh and it just has that family run feel that I love.
I have recently started playing around in the Miami Stand Up Comedy scene so I know I would have to head to some of the open mics if I had friends in town. My favorite being Gold Diggers Saloon which before covid was on Thursdays, but honestly almost any of the events @miamicomedy is hosting are worth checking out!
It’s not a trip to Miami without going to Wynwood and grabbing a sweet from one of the amazing bakeries they have there while walking around and checking out all the latest murals. I am not a donut fan, but even I can’t get enough of The Salty Donut! Also if you’re an art lover as most of my friends are we’d have to make a trip to The Perez Museum.
Lastly, you would have to check out South Beach even if just for the people watching!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Success is absolutely dependent on your community and the support others give you, especially as an artist! Instagram would have to be my number one go-to to find new work, inspiration and connections. Majority of my work comes from referrals, but when I am in need of something fresh or just additional work I turn to Instagram. I would not be where I am today as an artist without that platform to connect me with so many people across the globe. The greatest gift Instagram has given me aside from the plethora of clients, models and stylists, is my right hand @alyssahollywoodartistry! Without Alyssa I would not have been able to create half of the shoots I have done since moving to Miami, FL. She adds the beauty, the energy and the excitement to every set she is on!
