We had the good fortune of connecting with Dennis Dean and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dennis, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I came to Fort Lauderdale for a job as General Manager of the Fort Lauderdale Players, a theatre company supported by the City. It was a great experience working in the theatre community here, but I soon realized that I was mesmerized by photographing the surrounding locations and the beauty of people here in South Florida.

I decided to make my hobby my career, and Dennis Dean Images was born. I have been incorporated since 2001.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have a wonderful career as a photographer. I have been in countless exhibitions from across the U.S. to the U.K., including two in London at the Adonis Art Gallery. I have my images in over 30 published books, and hundreds of images gracing the covers of a plethora of publications.

As a photographer, I say if your photo is not becoming to you, then you should be coming to me 😉 Fun fact: I met Andy Warhol in NYC, he came to see an off-Broadway show I was in. I asked him for advice to an up-and-coming photographer. He said, “Don’t take pictures, make photographs.”

Ever since that moment with Andy, I have made it my goal as a photographer to continue to make photographs and create art for all to enjoy.

Over the years I have had the great opportunity to work with several LGBTQ publications to learn more about graphic design, photo editing and digital marketing. It has always been exciting to see my work published, but even more exciting knowing I also created the layout design too.

Content creating has become my passion. I thrive on the creative process and strategy to get successful results. I have worked with several clients who need to boost their business with eye-catching images and/or graphic designs. Another passion of mine is sharing the love of art. I just recently partnered with WMEG Inc., a Community Marketing and Events organization incorporating HOTSPOTS! Magazine and Happening Out Television Network. We now have a space to showcase the talents of local visual and performing artists, as well as fashion designers and authors.

HOTSPOTS! Art Gallery with Dennis Dean has two monthly events. The Opening Reception is the first Saturday of every month from 6pm-9pm. The Artists Showcase is the 3rd Saturday from 9pm-11pm. Every month there is a different exhibit displaying artworks featuring nine artists.

My goal with the art gallery is to make it a destination and an attraction for visitors and locals to visit and view the amazing talents that are right here in the Greater Fort Lauderdale area.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Every time my bestie comes to visit we make sure to explore The Drive in Wilton Manors at night. There are so many restaurants and bars to enjoy food, fun and friends.

During the day, brunch on Las Olas, then stroll the boulevard to go window shopping. An afternoon photo shoot is scheduled at Sebastian beach photographing fun swimsuit shots in the ocean.

A night of theatre at the Performing Arts Center, Island City Stage or at The Foundry is a must while bestie visits. Afterwards, we are back to The Drive for a fun-filled evening.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I dedicate my shoutout to ArtsUnited arts organization. ArtUnited uses the arts to present a positive message about the LGBTQ community and its allies to provide opportunities for artist to contribute fully and openly to the cultural, social, and economic success of South Florida.

I am grateful to ArtsUnited for giving me the opportunity over the years to showcase my photo art works at their signature events and exhibitions, also to socialize with creative talents and meet incredible artists and art lovers.

Being apart of this organization has made me appreciate the arts and LGBTQ communities even more. I am a better creative talent because of ArtsUnited.
