We had the good fortune of connecting with Joselin Chiu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joselin, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risk taking is necessary for growth. Risk brings Reward. Risk brings Evolution. Insight. Clarity. Confirmation. All the ingredients needed for growth.

Risks are such an important factor in my career and also personal life. Risks have always shown up as an opportunity for major gains; and in some occasions, where maybe it did not turn out in best case – taking the risk and not hitting the exact spot intended undeniably turned out to be a great lesson and stepping stone to a better and more clearer forward motion.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My story is quite interesting and definitely not an easy journey.

I started as a work experience high-school student at Faith Financial Group , a Miami Lakes based mortgage lender. I was 16 years old learning real estate for the first time , seeking to fulfill my class requirements for work experience hours. I fell in love with the “hustle” of the real estate business. However , soon after the market would crash and I was just birthing my first born son. I had to instantly create a plan B.

I decided to pursue my psychology degree at Florida International University.

Thankfully with the support of his Father, and my family, I was able to complete my Bachelors in no time & quickly after, was accepted into the masters in counseling program at FIU. A year into my masters I realized that I was accumulating a lot of student loan debt, my hours of service in the therapy field were of high demand in the times where I needed to be a Mom, & the compensation VS what cost of living was for my son and I – would not make for a comfortable living. I was so confused. Coming from an immigrant family who valued education so highly as a solution to better living , it was not adding up for us. I decided to open up a gym and try to made ends meet through entrepreneurship. That did not work out as planned and I quickly liquidated every asset I had & exhausted every student loan available to me.

One Saturday, I attended my cousins bridal shower ( who worked with me in the mortgage company back in 2004 when I was completing my high school work experience hours ) and I was sharing my frustrations with my current projected income, time schedule, etc. of chasing the “American dream” of a higher education degree. She told me that her boss had just opened up his own mortgage lending branch and was looking for help , maybe it would be a good start. I met with Jorge that same week and little did I know my entire world would turn inside out. I started working as a part time recruiter at American Bancshares , while completing my Applied Behavior Analysis field hours towards completing my ABA license. Within a years time, it became crystal clear. Jorge guided me through growing his business, getting my loan originators license, prodcuing for my self & no more than 24 months later I had earned 6 figures on my own. Not only had I earned the most I had ever made , but most importantly , I earned that with the most flexible of schedules I had ever had. I was the homeroom parent at my sons school, I chaperoned every field trip with my son, was available for every football practice & game and;  I had my baby girl , Audrey. All the small things I could never do with my therapy schedule… I now was showing up as a rockstar mom. Involved. Available. And building our life.

My life changed FOREVER. I learned the value of entrepreneurship. I mastered the grind of building my own business.

While being an entrepreneur surely takes more than 40 hours a week; with consistency, commitment and the right guidance and support ; it is by far , and undeniably, the most rewarding journey any person can take.

The challenges of entrepreneurship are real, and truly test you to take risks. But with great risks, come great rewards! There were days that I would be in the office until 7pm , having dinner with Adrian in the office, Showing up with Adrian on Saturday for an open house. The first 3 years were intense, but when I saw that the time and effort you put into real estate is absolutely compensated back to you ; and the availability to create financial freedom is so much more available then it felt as I pursued my Ph. D.

All while mothering my child , to become a therapist…. It just became crystal clear that making a very comfortable living , where I could invest, save, and enjoy life & build a consistent flow to create a better work-life balance ; instantly became a dream come true for my family and I.

I am so grateful for every piece of my journey. My education offered me the strongest of tools to build honest relationships that focus on solutions. The people along my journey offered me the most loyal of guidance to teach me to build this mortgage business. My debt offered me the lesson to value financial freedom and the value of my time as dollars. Overall, This journey has taught me that if there is anything you set your mind to, you can surely achieve. With commitment, dedication, and an undying desire to create it. You can do anything!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If you had a week to spend with me here in the beautiful South Florida. I would spoil you with amazing yummy food, being a foodie this is important to me because we have the yummiest food here. I would absolutely make reservations at Novikov for dinner on a Wednesday for Ladies night. We would then go dancing at Sugar, the Tea room, or Baby Jane. I would book for us to relax 3 nights at Bungalows in Key Largo. This is an amazing adults only , all inclusive escape to paradise just an hour away. Have dinner at Chef Michael’s on our way back. Next we would go to Mamey to enjoy a delicious Cuban inspired meal with live modernized spanish music. For me it’s all about the food so basically we would be eating all week : KYU, Smith & Wollensky, Bourbon Steak , Council Oak, Novikov, 1800Lucky, PAO, Finka, Whisk, Chef Adrienne’s, Beaker & Grey, NobU, Korner67, Jaya, Joyia , and the yumminess continues. 🙂

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My entire success is dedicated to my children, Adrian & Audrey. They are the light in my fire, the beat in my step, my every reason to soar higher than the day before. Adrian & Audrey you are my main source of motivation to make sure that I create a life that models for you what a purpose driven life looks like. I intend to make you proud.

I will also take a moment to share my gratitude to my previous manager , Jorge Perera, for seeing something in me when I couldn’t see it in myself. You took a chance and invested into me; your time , monies & efforts, truly are a part of what ignited my journey & some of the base of this amazing foundation I have built for my family & myself. Thank you so much for your dedication to me.

To my support group, all those that helped me through baby sitting, picking up the kids, listening to my endless ideas, showing up for us in all the ways you have, to help me make this life possible : Mom, Armando, Sasha, Ashley, Marisol, Alex, Yayi, Madre, Mike, Dayan, and everyone else.
