We had the good fortune of connecting with Lisa Crichlow Helly and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lisa, can you share the most important lesson you’ve learned over the course of your career?
I have learned to invest in myself. When starting up, there are very few people who will be believe in your dream or vision and even fewer who will contribute to making it happen. It is usually after some sort of big success that we here the same naysayers then say “I knew you could it!” As frustrating as this is, I am a FIRM believer that everything happens for a reason. There are seasons in life where God will allow you to purposely be alone or not have the support of others, even though they love you. This is for two reasons: to get closer to Him and to learn to encourage ourselves. To learn to validate and celebrate ourselves. Don’t let lack of support plant a seed of bitterness within you. Instead, ask yourself “what is this experience trying to teach me?” Then… grow and own your path!
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started a nonprofit called “H.O.P.E. for the Beautiful Minds” back in 2015. The word “H.O.P.E.” is an acronym for “Hold On, Spain Ends”. Our mission is summed up in 3 E’s: Encourage, Empower and Educate individuals struggling with mental health issues. What sets us apart? Glad you asked. We are committed to providing help in tangible ways. There’s nothing more frustrating than having issues and nothing but mere words are offered. We hear things like “I’ll pray for you” or “sending good energy your way”. That’s a start. But that cannot be the end. With us, it’s “hey, we’ll pray for you AND here is this to help out”. Our missions have included outreaches to provide essential items and food to the homeless, toys for underprivileged and disabled children, women’s empowerment events and so much more. We refuse to put a limit on what God can do through us and so we are continually moving in different ways to continue to meet the needs of as many people as we can.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
I love the beach here. It is what South Florida is known for and very good reason. And I love the fact that different beaches give different vibes. South Beach gives the perfect night life vibes, while Fort Lauderdale Beach can be a popular “Spring Breaker” beach, saturated with day bars and loud music. One of my favorites is Hollywood Beach because it’s a much chiller, family vibe. I love going there with my children.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
That’s easy! God gets all of the glory and all of the credit! Without Him, I literally would not be here. I started my nonprofit organization from the direct result of my spirituality and relationship with God. I look back on all that He has done for me and blessed me with and I have chosen to show that same love to other people… a small reminder that HOPE is still alive! As for people, a big shout out to my tight knit “Soul Tribe”. They have encouraged and supported me from day one, even when others closest to me doubted. They held me accountable and kept me pushing forward. Lastly, my children, who are the physical embodiment of hope for me. I love you guys!
