We had the good fortune of connecting with Juan Tobon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Juan, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
Being able to find where the problem lies and then attack it in a very specific way. This happens on a daily basis whenever I don’t know what instrument would be best for an orchestra part, or how to articulate a scale better and so on, I found that knowing the problem is 80% of the solution; the rest is intuition and some degree of deep thinking
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I never try to make music with the though of being innovative. I feel that people get lost in this concept which does not really help to improve your level or art in a significant way. For me the way we recreate art or music in this case is just a matter someone’s experiences being reflected on a piece of music or an interpretation. I had been thinking how hard it was to get out of the comfort zone and jump to the next level, specially when I was starting my career. Is so normal to have this behavior since I did not know any better, I was not experienced enough so I could not understand how to approach music or people who did music, I felt quite intimidated for the world being so competitive, but after all I managed my fears and understood how music is just an expression, a beautiful language that some understand but all enjoy. I want people to listen to my music and connect to their personal life, their day by day stories and all kinds of feelings that we as humans portrait.
Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
Well of course music would be a big part of it. I will start with a trip to Bayside grab some bite, walk around, move a little bit to Brickell, then in the night time I will take him or her to Le Chat Noir, LaGniappe. and after the Jazz sets go and walk around wynwood.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
