Meet Deja Lanee | Makeup Artist & Educator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Deja Lanee and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Deja, why did you pursue a creative career?
I pursued an artistic and creative career because art chose me. My father passed down his creative genes to me, so my connection with being a creative was inevitable. When I was younger I would find any and everything to create. From using glue to create a design and shaving crayons to stick to the paper to being the photographer for the newspaper and year book of my high school. Self expression feeds my soul. I’m blessed to be able to use beautiful individuals to express myself through makeup .

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am “ one of the lucky ones.” as some people would call it. To be able to dance to the beat of your own drum is everything for me. Creating a lifestyle that allows me to answer to myself is one of my biggest accomplishments. I got to where I’m at today by the village that surrounds me and my son. Without my village I am nothing. I got to where I am today by sacrifices and taking leaps of faith! Nothing is ever easy so you have to prepare yourself mentally for the ride. I overcame a lot of challenges by praying and staying true to myself. I’ve learned so many lessons along the way. The top two are 1. Stay true to yourself and 2. Be patient nothing happens over night.
Hmmmm… what would I want the world to know about Deja Lanee of Deja Lanee Artistry …. I would want the world to know that I DO NOT take anything for granted. Every client, referral, compliment etc I do not take for granted. I know that I’m blessed .
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Haha this is a good one especially since I’m the planner type of friend !
If my bff was visiting for a week long I would definitely do these things
RH rooftop -for aesthetics and the chicken and purée dish
Kaluz -( the bread pudding is amazing )
Bar One -for a fancy Caribbean vibe and the amazing food !
Jasmine Thai & Sushi – Definitely a hidden gem, the fried rice is AMAZING, along with their sushi and Thai-tini
Batch – the BEST skillet cornbread
I would definitely take her to the beach somewhere where there’s not a lot of action so we can relax. The Hardrock for sure for a spa day and a nice Caribbean party where we can end the night with some jerk chicken right off the grill. Haha

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would love to shout out my amazing mother! She pours into me like no other. If it wasn’t for my mother I would’ve given up on a lot of my “silly ideas”. All it takes is one phone call and I’m back on track. I cant ever thank her enough !

She’s honestly an amazing artist. Naturally. I’m a former client and can definitely vouch when I say Deja Lanee is on of a kind. More souls should most definitely work with her.
