We had the good fortune of connecting with Lottie Hulme and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Lottie, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have been a journalist for some years now, and in journalism there are many different strands. I love writing, but I wanted to expand into social media to use my skills more. As my niche is showbiz, I translated that onto my TikTok and didn’t expect to grow a following so quickly but it thrived, and it allowed me to use my love of presenting in a new and exciting way. I love engaging with my followers on there and I think having a niche really helps with growth.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I definitely wouldn’t say it has been an easy journey making a career as a showbiz journalist, but it has been a fun one. I never set out to do showbiz. I’d always had an interest in celebrity culture and writing, but never thought to combine the two. I initially worked as a fashion and lifestyle writer while living in Edinburgh and doing my Masters in Journalism. It was here I started to write features and present, and I knew immediately that was what I wanted to do for a really long time. When I’m writing, nothing else matters. It’s my happy place. My zen! I then went to London and became a Deputy Editor of a luxury London website and I wrote all things food and travel – from reviewing London’s best restaurants to travel across to globe to write. It opened my eyes to the endless possibilities of journalism. Moving to OK! was where I realised my true passion for showbiz journalism and presenting. I think it’s all about trusting the process but also about working hard. The way I operate is working super hard then but treating myself too, so that the effort is worth the reward. Always have a goal and something to look forward to, and that makes the hard work that little bit easier.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents are who I’d give the most credit to. My dad once said to me if you find a career you love you’ll never work a day in your life – it stuck! My parents are the driving force behind everything I do, with constant encouragement and wisdom. But I also have to thank the organisations I’ve been involved with – the team at OK! Magazine, i-on Magazine, The Handbook. I’ve worked with some of the most amazing editors who’ve helped me harness my skills as a writer.
