We had the good fortune of connecting with Amelia De Vita and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Amelia, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk innately has a negative connotation but really, it should be seen as a positive thing. Whether you take a risk and succeed or fail, it means you have learnt and grown from an experience or a choice, which, in my opinion, is far better than playing it safe and staying the same.
One of the best things I ever did in my life was to take a risk and move to the United States from Australia. Australia was and always has been my home since I was born and I have a very tight-knit family. Leaving the comfort and love of my friends, my family and my country was very hard, it was a risk that may not have paid off. But in the end, it pushed me further out of my comfort zone than I could have ever imagined and steered me towards great things.
I sold everything I had and came here with one suitcase. I literally started from scratch. I could have failed miserably and at times I certainly felt like I had. But in my mind, taking that risk had to be worth it, so I pushed myself further mentally and physically than I ever had. I was looking for growth both personally and in my career and let me tell you I certainly found both. Ever since then I have been on a wild adventure every day meeting new people, going new places and pushing myself through my work and even in my workouts!
I don’t know who I would have been if I didn’t leave my comfort zone but if I had to guess I would say I wouldn’t have been as worldly, confident, competent and caring as I am now. Pushing myself out of my comfort zone and taking a risk moulded my personality, skill set and beliefs and I wouldn’t have done it any other way.
Take that risk you’ve been thinking about today!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started my career in Australia working many hours for free before I had proven my commitment to radio. I worked at a rural radio station before working my way up to a top radio station in the city before moving up to work from a helicopter doing television traffic reports for The Today Show and Sunrise. It’s all about being a harder worker than anyone else. Do the stuff most people think below them and you’ll rise to the top faster than they ever will. You can’t wish something to happen, you have to get your hands dirty and prove your worth. As my mum always says “spit in one hand and wish in the other. Then see which one fills up first!” 😀
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take them around Fort Lauderdale – Maybe during the day we would go to Hugh Taylor Birch State Park for a bike ride and then after we are done we would cool off with a beverage and a snack at Park and Ocean which is their cafe with live music. Then we would go to the beach for the rest of the day! For the evening we would hit up the Oyster Bar at Coconuts for some drinks and appetizers, then have dinner at Boat Yard and enjoy their amazing food. If we weren’t too tired yet, maybe we would go to Sparrow for some rooftop drinks and a view of the city and then we would finish the night at Rhythm and Vine to groove the night away. 😀
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My mum for sure! She has always been a big supporter of mine and has encouraged me to follow through with whatever I put my mind to.
