We had the good fortune of connecting with Justin Garner and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Justin, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I decided to pursue a musical career at a very early age. I grew up singing in the church choir and quickly fell in love with music. In my early teenage years, I enjoyed classics by Lionel Richie, Earth, Wind, and Fire, and the overall sound of soul music. That led to me creating and writing my own songs, with lyrics that fit me personally. I felt there was a void that was missing in mainstream music, and I wanted to fill it.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a singer, songwriter, and performer. Born and raised from the small town of Plaquemine, Louisiana, I always had this precise vision for my life. I’ve spent years creating and performing original music, covering top hits, and even had the chance to write for some of today’s biggest artists. My music has been featured on Spotify’s New Music Friday, Amazon’s Breakthrough R&B and I’ve landed features across several digital stores.
In 2019, I’ve had the opportunity to share the stage with artists such as Katy Perry and Mary J. Blige at both the 50th Jazz & Heritage Festival and ESSENCE Festival in New Orleans. This year, I’m back at the ESSENCE Festival of Culture and will grace Center Stage on July 1st. I am so immensely proud of how far I’ve come and I am truly in love with the journey.
Be warned, this journey wasn’t always easy and there were moments in which I felt tested. Being from such a small town at one point, was difficult because I just didn’t have access to the many musical opportunities…. or so I thought. The minute I focused and placed all of my energy on creating music, and loving where I was in life, the doors of opportunity opened wide. I look back at that moment as a testament to always remember your why. It’s super imperative to keep your purpose in clear view as you pursue your dreams.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If you were to visit me near my home, I would take you to two cities. The first stop would be Mike Anderson’s in Gonzales, LA. They have the best seafood in the city. Next, we would head the road a few minutes to New Orleans, LA, and visit my favorite bars and restaurants in Bywater.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to shout out my support system which includes my wife, daughter, and family. Being a musician can be a very daunting and grueling experience at times and they truly keep me inspired and motivated. I operate best on the love I receive from my family.
