We had the good fortune of connecting with Alejandro Gonzalez Sole and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alejandro, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I always wanted to start and own a business, to have an impact in the community. And being a Software Engineer, I knew that software was the industry I wanted to focus on. When COVID started, I realized that it was the perfect moment and a great opportunity to start a digital business. I was talking with a close friend of mine, who was in the restaurant business, and we came up with an idea that could help his business and businesses alike, target a different source of revenue. Online classes and events were very hot at that time. So, we decided to give it a try and within 3 months we had a prototype of the website where people were able to register for virtual classes and to teach an event. After that we talked to some friends and family, got funding, started the business, and since hired additional staff to further the business growth.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I was blessed to have the opportunity to work with some Fortune 500 companies in my career and also some start-ups that are now unicorns (meaning they are now worth over $1 billion). Building a business is never easy because you’ll always have to face different challenges. When you master one hurdle there’s always the next waiting for you. And sometimes the next challenge is even harder than the one you just overcame.
The most important thing is to never give up. When I was younger my mom told me:” Life is full of bubbles floating around you, and each bubble holds an opportunity. There will always be plenty of bubbles in the air. It’s up to you to know which ones to pop. Sometimes, we’re so fixated on a specific bubble that we forge about the bubbles closest to us. But then we realize we have many more bubbles to pop.”
When starting My Walrus App, we really focused on the community. We made sure that everyone knows that anyone can learn something new online, and that anyone, with the right skills, can teach others and build a businesses around those set of skills. We understand how difficult the digital world can be and for those challenges, we want to provide a system that is so user friendly that no matter which age you are you are able to use it. We are also working on providing more tools on the platform for people with disabilities, like being properly accessible for screen readers, colorblind friendly, and even adding audio narrations to our blog.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’d kick off their visit by taking them to Surfside. The Surf Club Restaurant at the Four Seasons with top American chef Thomas Keller is a fantastic place for a fancy dinner or a drink. The service is great and really sets the mood for a relaxed vacation in Miami. Another restaurant I’d like them to experience is Cote. A Korean fusion steak house in the Design District. You can enjoy different cuts of meat in this very communicative Korean BBQ style setting with everyone seating around the grill table. Most of my friends also like to do some shopping when they are in town and for that I’d take them to Brickell City Center. Of course, the nightlife in Downtown Miami is also not to be missed. And for breakfast we’d hit the Café Bastille at least once.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My brother inspires me a lot. He always encouraged me to build this business and to also take some calculated risk with it. Having his experience guide me has helped me throughout the entire process of the business. He’s helped me from the actual business model to the 3-year-plan all the way to seeking funding.
My dad is also an entrepreneur and has been my inspiration to continue pursuing different opportunities. My mom as her own translation service. They both really showed me the importance of being independent, to have a plan and vision for the future, and that failure is part of succeeding. Which I had to learn the hard way.
