We had the good fortune of connecting with Des and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Des, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
People always say “I don’t want my children to live the life I had to live” I woke up and said I no longer want to live a regular life. The struggle was real for me growing up. I had to grow up fast. I’ve always been a hard worker. That was always a must. Go to school get your education so you can get a “good paying job.” Yes, that’s the common thing in most households of my generation. So I went to Johnson & Wales University to get a Bachelors in Criminal Justice. Well, let’s just say all the jobs that I ended up getting had NOTHING to do with the criminal justice field. I was working with the Department of Highway Safety and that job just wasn’t it! So I started out doing Eyelashes and Eyebrows. That was okay for a while, but it wasn’t keeping my attention. I wanted to tap in to my inner creativity. So I started doing research on skincare. I tried out making some things to see if it peaked my interest. Surprisingly it did! I started making and using my own facial soaps, feminine products, and body butters. I would get a lot of compliments on how my skin looked and what i was using. That’s when I knew this could work.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business isn’t only my business it’s my sanctuary. My business is my peace outside of my children. It’s not about the money for me. I genuinely love helping people overcome insecurities that they may have and help building self confidence. Outside of providing products I’m a counselor. My clients are like family. Without them there would be no BeautyBratzMiami. I get constant emails and messages about personal issues and what my products have done to help them. I get personal requests to make specific things just for them. Running a business is hard. Hell it’s harder than having an actual job working for someone! I have to be the business literally. I have to purchase supplies, do inventory, make products, cut, package, label, ship packages, respond to emails, respond to text messages, marketing and the list goes on! Until you have enough funding to hire at least one person it’s all on YOU! Not to mention being a full time mother and working a full time job. So yes it’s hard. You have to have the go getter mentality. You have to REALLY want it. You have to ask yourself what drives you. Because if you don’t you won’t have an answer and you will quit within the first few weeks. Why waste your time if you aren’t mentally motivated?
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Whew..I hate to say it I’m a homebody. So I don’t know of the current hot spots. Now I am a traveler though. So if she was to come here then we definitely would be leaving here lol
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My children. I have grown so much being a mother. Without them who knows what life decisions i would’ve made. We have been through the good, bad, and the ugly! Every step of the way they have been right there with me. No judging, no bad talking, just there loving on me and appreciating me for being their mother.
