We had the good fortune of connecting with KT Merry and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi KT, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think that risk is the backbone of growth. That at each turn we must be willing to step outside of our comfort zone, to challenge ourselves to be beginners (again!) and try new things, overcome new challenges and continue to level up. While it’s tempting to relax into our expertise and sit comfortably from our place of knowing, it’s daring to step out into the unknown, staying curious, always learning and continue to ask how we can evolve and become better that truly fulfills us and always gives us the opportunity to reach our true potential.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Alongside being a destination wedding and editorial photographer, I’m a passionate conservationist, public speaker and business coach and mentor to other photographers. I’ve never met a dog I didn’t like, I run in every city that I visit, and I like to end my days with a martini.
KT Merry Photography consists of myself, my partner Chad Keffer, and a small team of dedicated professionals. Chad and I shoot exclusive destination weddings, editorials, and bridal campaigns across the globe for designers like Monique Lhuillier. In addition to being consistently recognized as top wedding photographers, we also curate a series of fine art photography to support threatened species via Render Loyalty and the KT Merry Print Shop.
Drawing on my background in fashion and editorials, I prefer to direct, compose and curate while still allowing spontaneity to lead the way. My many years of wedding experience allow me to let the day naturally unfold to best tell the story and experience of each couple without missing a beat. Because I believe that couples shouldn’t have to choose between directed, composed portraits or photo journalistic shots, I shoot both. The result is a textured story that captures the essence of the couple and the spirit of the day in complementing visual layers. I’m best known for my natural, ethereal, painterly wedding portraits that freeze time and emotion.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely make sure to budget time for the following: A day at the dog beach at Haulover, it’s my happy place
Sushi and Makoto in Bal Harbor accompanied by epic people watching
Happy hour at the River Oyster, my favorite
A couple days (during the week to avoid the crowds) in the Moorings visiting The Moorings, Pierre’s, Lorelei
A visit to the farmer’s market on Sunday at Legion park and stopping for an epic burrito at Uptown 66 or vegan lunch at Love Life Cafe
Le tub is a must visit for old Florida flavor (and service)
An afternoon strolling Vizcaya with the audio tour for the fascinating history
And I always love running Key Biscyane at Sunrise
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
To all the powerful women demonstrating what is possible when we are brave and continue to raise the ceilings above us. From my person mentors and idols like my horse trainer Donna Hustace to conservation icon Jane Goodall and the countless women entrepreneurs who have inspired and impacted by journey, thank you.
