We had the good fortune of connecting with Joan Gil and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Joan, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
Music and the arts is something that I have always had a passion for. Helping artist and seeing their vision come to light is something that I always dreamed of doing.Due to the pressures of societal norms I decided to pursue a safer career choice and to put my passion for music and arts on the back burner. When it came time for college I decided to push my love for music to the side and I majored in Psychology. My passion for music still remained which is why I decided regardless of my major to apply for music internships which catapulted my career to where I am today.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I currently work at Warner Records in the Urban promotions department and have been working at Warner for 2.5 years, as I look back on my journey their were many challenges but something I always try to remind myself of is “Nothing worth having comes easy”. My journey began in college where I interned at various radio stations including Sirius XM Rock The Bells Radio, Radio 103.9 and Power 105.1 with Angie Martinez. This came after constantly applying and trying to gain connections in any way that I could. I will forever be grateful for all the internships I have had. I will always be an advocate for internships because it really teaches you so much and you are able to not only create relationship with people in the industry but you can meet life-long friends with the same interests. Work ethic and determination is the biggest lessons I was taught early on sometimes we see the vision but we aren’t there yet and sometimes we get frustrated with ourselves but we have to keep pushing. My goal is to help not only artist but people trying to get their footing in this industry.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This question is a tough one but it all depends on a lot different things.

For some great food and some hookah I would recommend Antika Grill, they have the best Middle Eastern food and hookah.

If they wanted to do a fun activity I would take them to Rewax and Un wine in Jersey City, which you can make your own scented candle or we could hit Sojo Spa for some relaxation.

If they wanted to actually party then Little Tijuana it is!

There is sooo much to do in North Jersey, I would make sure they are never bored!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My parents deserve all the praise in the world for the work ethic and determination they have instilled in me. Both coming from a different country they have always tried their best to give me endless opportunities and without them I would not be where I am today. To my mentors and friends thank you for always being there for me and giving me advice and constantly motivating me.
