We had the good fortune of connecting with Drew and Martin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Drew and Martin, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?

We were often told that new business ownership means being chained to that business 24/7! We recently decided to close the salon for a week during September so our team can rest and enjoy some time off with their loved ones.

Now more than ever, post covid, work-life balance matters. Everyone appreciates free time, relaxation and doing the things they love. We believe that happy/rested employees perform at their best. Therefore, so will the business.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?

Drew and I are looking at a combined 40 years of experience, so we’ve seen and been through a lot! We both come from small towns and grew our career step-by-step, working really hard to be where we are. Coming from 2 different worlds, we combined our visions to create Beauty Shop Miami.

Building Beauty Shop Miami was certainly not easy, but was very exciting! All the challenges that we have been through made us very vulnerable but stronger as a team.

During the buildout, a lot of people were asking “What will make you different from another salon?” I always said that WE make the difference! We are who we are! We are kind, funny, caring, inclusive, and honest people who look for similar qualities in those that join our team. We are doing this because it’s our passion, not because it is our job.

We are so proud to be a Sustainable Hair Salon. We’ve partnered with Green Circle Salons, a program that helps us recycle 95% of all the waste, from the hair off the floor to the color left over in the bowl. It is quite impressive and very fulfilling to know that we are contributing to the sustainability of the planet.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?

We love to support small local businesses. These are some of our favorite spots in Miami.

– BAR MELI 69 for their authentic Greek food, amazing service and ambiance. You have to try their sangria, best in town!

– LUNA PASTA for their homemade and always fresh pasta.

– UPTOWN 66 for the best tacos and guacamole in town.

– UCHI is definitely the best sushi in Miami. Their happy hour is fantastic!

– SUITE HABANA CAFE for their killer cold brew.

– THE ANDERSON is perfect for a delicious drink and an eclectic evening.

– THE CITADEL for the unlimited food options and drinks. Their rooftop is beautiful. They also have a sustainable market called PIVOT. Go check it out and support local!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?

Our salon would not have the success that it has without our amazing colleagues and clients. They’ve always supported us and cheered us during the whole process, and still keep doing so. They are our family and without them, we would not be here! So THANK YOU!
