We had the good fortune of connecting with Jahleel Gordon and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jahleel, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I have always been keen on skincare. Skincare has so many different avenues but the avenue that is highlighted the most is ACNE. But here’s the thing is, not everyone has acne as their skincare issue. Some people have psoriasis, some have eczema, others have hyperpigmentation, and some people just want something that works with their sensitive skin. I am one of those people who have contact dermatitis aka eczema and it was such a whirlwind trying to heal my skin. I tried OTC (over the counter) and those were a dead end, prescribed remedies were too potent and caused my skin to react terribly, and everything in between just made it worse. That’s when I decided to take matters into my own hands and create a solution. When family and friends noticed a difference in my skin, they wanted me to make it for them and everybody around them. I decided that I wanted to make a change in the skincare industry after I saw how my handcrafted products made people fall back in love with their skin and not see skincare as intimidating or as a chore.
What should our readers know about your business?
I believe what sets my business apart from others is my passion for skincare, I just love creating skincare. I even went to esthetician school to learn how to properly treat skin, facial services coming soon btw! Honestly, everything about my business excites me, it just makes me happy. I got where I am today business-wise by doing my research and asking for help. That’s one thing about me, I will ask questions. There is another skincare business that I adore, UrbanSkin Beauty, based in Houston, TX. She has helped me a lot in my journey from finding a label printer to helping me create content and everything in-between. Things can get tricky when it comes to creating skincare from a blank slate. My journey into entrepreneurship has taught me to be patient and to continue to put my best foot forward. Patience is a very important virtue when it comes to entrepreneurship. I have been creating skincare for about 3 going on 4 years and I learn something new along the way every time. I want people to know that even though skincare is not a one-size-fits-all, overnight process, MNxBeauty is the one for you.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My bestie and I are foodies that love boba! First things first, when she gets in town we are hitting up Tap42 for Peachy Lychees, Lemon Drop shots, Tres Leches French Toast, and Spicy Salmon Tostones. Then we hit the beach after going to SoftTea for some soft-served boba milk teas and mochi and have girl talk and catch up. There was this thing we would do where we would go to a store like Beall’s or Goodwill and shop for each other to wear to dinner. It wouldn’t be any random restaurant, we would go to places like Spiked Rich or Foxy Brown looking CRAZYYYYY. Silver Spot is the go-to movie theater also because their amaretto sour is elite for a movie theater or Bowlero is one of those places to just let loose and have fun. After a fun night just head downstairs to Ocean One Bar & Grill for cheap but tasty food and drinks. The atmosphere is always good there.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mother is the one who started this all. The MN in MNxBeauty means Minou’s Natural, Minou was my mothers childhood nickname. My mother had skin like the most beautiful porcelain doll ever created, it was flawless! I dedicated my business to her because in my eyes she was the definition of beauty. She taught me that a little lwil maskriti could go a long way and always wear a pair of earrings no matter where I go! If she was here today, she would be by my side making all my products with me. My family, friends, and boyfriend have also been immensely supportive, they push me when I need it and even when I don’t lol
