We had the good fortune of connecting with Malaeja White and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Malaeja, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I wanted to help others who may have went through or were going through a dark time like I had experienced with anxiety, depression, and even suicidal thoughts. It took me a good 6 years to understand that I brought myself to a sense of peace with getting my mindset out of that dark place. I had taken action, and saw hope on the other side. When I realized all I kept doing was repeating the process of utilizing a planner, creating the harmonious space I felt I deserved, understood my feelings first and then effectively communicated, stopped worrying about what I don’t have and taking action on what I can control; I realized gaining clarity in your life is truly simple. At that point, I had lived this lifestyle for years and many family members and friends, looking from outside in, thought I had it all together. Honestly, I just learned to control my chaotic schedule, took actions on what I could control, and found coping techniques to not fall back into depression or control my anxiety. No, I didn’t have a therapist through all of this, I just had the mindset that I wanted to be better and that I was going to get better. With all that being said, I wanted to show others how simple it is to find mental and emotional clarity with items such as planners, home decor, and stationery.
What should our readers know about your business?
Simple Clarity Co is a business providing mental and emotional clarity through stationery and home decor. Everything from the notebook covers to the names of the candle scents is a reminder or what can bring clarity into one’s life. In the beginning it consisted of a lot of late nights talking to overseas vendors for mass production of notebooks and planners, tons of research on how to safely make candles, and many months of prototypes of planner designs and layouts. Throughout the years I’d say the hardest part personally was managing my time with two kids, then three kids, working full time, being a wife, and running a business. The hardest part being a handmade and personal design business was understanding not everyone is going to like design or candle scent. I had to learn it was there preference, not a negative outlook on me personally. The lessons I’ve learned is, it is ok to seek help in the areas I’m not strong in (marketing, artwork, social media management) and time management and continuously effective education in your field is key to a successful business. Remember anyone that you seek knowledge from should give you the tools to help you make more money than what you spent on their business growth tools. Simple Clarity Co is a business that is still in it’s younger years, but it’s going to be so impactful. This business is built on a foundation of passion, and giving back to enlighten others of strength in themselves. We are all so powerful, someone just has to come in and ignite that inner spark.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Besides starting with a light breakfast, we’d be outdoors doing a physical activity to start the morning. It would depends on their level of athleticism of course. Then, we’d have to do lunch at a unique culture based restaurant. Trying new places to eat opens up your palette, mind, and understanding of another culture. Then we’d finish off the day with an artist aspect, whether painting with a twist, jaz in the park, or a theater play.
