We had the good fortune of connecting with Benjamin Krohn and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Benjamin, how do you think about risk?
Risk takes on two facets for us at After Dark, financial and “social.” Financial one is straightforward, are we going to make money on this or not? Social is a bit more complex, i.e. will an artist we are scouting align with our values in the long run or will this new venue provide the right experience. Then of course the two mix constantly and affect our daily decisions. Figuring out which artist to take a risk on that may/may not have experience being in front of a live audience can be just as crucial as deciding how much we want to charge for tickets. The right mixture of these risks often provides the greatest rewards and we strive to really ride that line of risk.

What should our readers know about your business?
After Dark as a business is run in two channels, events and artists. Of course the both work together but we think what sets us apart is being able to blend a roster of high-potential candidates and with high-energy experiences. When the formula works, we get an event that leaves lasting memories, and artists with a boosted platform to be able to move to the next step of their careers. We’ve had many stumbles in the past like any small business so it has not been easy in the least, but we learn from all of our mistakes! If not for this virus, After Dark was slated to move international at the end of 2020 and have high hopes to continue those plans next year.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Being the co-owner of an entertainment company, this question writes itself. First I’d say we would get in touch with some culture, and what better culture than FOOD! Personally, love asian food and would almost always recommend getting some ramen or just heading to 1-800-Lucky in Wynwood if they’ve never been to Miami to give them a little taste. From there get in touch with nature and hit the mountain bike trails at Oleta State Park or Markham Park (always love a little workout!) Then at the apex of the trip, of course hit up one of our shows for an unforgettable night. But a trip like this wouldn’t be complete without a hearty home-cooked breakfast afterwards and a warm hug before they leave.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
After Dark works with so many awesome collectives in many facets but the two we’d like to recognize most are DLTA Division and Annex. Both awesome underground groups focused on experiences that last rather than how much can we make at the door. Shoutout of course to all of our After Dark artists who’ve been churning out releases even in the middle of a pandemic!
