We had the good fortune of connecting with Mariela Mejias and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mariela, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
My inspiration came from myself and everything I’ve been through. Getting a divorce after 25 years of being married, becoming a single mom and getting into the dating scene at 40. Here in Miami, I have found it to be very difficult to find Mr Right yet. That has made me become even more independent and I don’t regret one second of it. Given the experiences I’ve had and the experiences of my close friends, I took it upon myself to begin writing to inspire women like me that anything is possible even without a man.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My writing is my art. I don’t feel that I am set apart from others because my writing is based on my actual past and those of my close friends. These are stories that happen to real people in real life. My proudest moment was when my vision of my writing came to life in a play and I was able to execute and share it with the world. I’m ecstatic for my new project that’s to come soon that’s called Sexo en Miami that will be featured on @mujer_sin_filtro_miami on Instagram and on Facebook. I got where I am today by believing in myself and doing what I loved, writing. Although it wasn’t easy, I saw the impact I had on others and that I could help many. There’s been many bumps on the road and the most difficult I’d say was the newspaper column I had to write with a continuing 2 week deadline. This too allowed me to stay consistent, push more toward my dream and to never give up. I want the world to know they’re not alone, we all have our ups and downs but there’s always people you can relate to who are going through the same circumstance. I want to be that helping hand, that support and that voice!

Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
First off I would definitely take them to my favorite spot called Lagniappe on Friday night since they have outdoor seating, wines, charcuterie and live jazz. Saturday morning we would sail on my kayak or paddle board in Brickell Bay then grab some delicious pizza in Mister 01. That night, we would hit up Cantina La Veinte to grab some drinks and have more of a lounge feel. Sunday’s are for brunch at American Social followed by The Wharf for some good music and outdoor bay views.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My daughter because I’ve had to push to become more independent because of her, my family who have shown me tremendous support, my friends whom I appreciate for sharing their stories with me, my fans who I’ve inspired and continue to motivate me to keep going and to my director for trusting me and giving me an opportunity to present my play and make this all come to life.
