We had the good fortune of connecting with Aaron Hernandez and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Aaron, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind the success of my brand is doing things that I don’t have to do. I can’t stress this enough as in my opinion it is one of the most important factors in achieving success. The things that we have to do will always get done because, well we have to do them. It’s much harder to act on things that won’t affect you much if you don’t do them and things that you won’t see an immediate benefit from. But just because in the near future it won’t have an impact on you, it doesn’t mean that you aren’t holding yourself back from success everytime that you pass on something that you should do but don’t have to.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Being a photographer/videographer is an extremely fun business to be in but it’s very different than most professions. For one, there are people of all levels so that sometimes leads to deflation of value. This happens more when you are starting off that you have to price your services extremely low because there are always people that will do it cheaper and until you have built up your clientele, it’s something that you can’t really escape. Another thing that most people don’t understand is how much more goes into it than just taking the pictures and editing them. There is no such thing as a “quick photoshoot” or “quick video”
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am lucky to live in the most amazing city in the world, Miami. There are so many places that you can’t go wrong but there are definitely some that you can’t miss. First and foremost, I know you can get it in other places but still, you need to pass by Raising Canes, the best food spot on the planet. I’m not sponsored but I should be. Another place that I enjoy going in the city is to downtown Miami. There is so much to do in Wynwood, Design District, Brickell. It’ll take you more than a day to go through it all. Lastly one thing that you cannot miss while being in Miami, is waking up at 5am and going to the beach to watch the sunrise. Truly one of the most peaceful and enjoyable experiences. I wish I would do it more.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I want to give a huge shoutout to my guy Yusuf from the Bitcoin Classic. He was the first person to let me shoot at his event and the person who first took a chance on me without having any type of resume or portfolio in the basketball space. It’s actually a pretty interesting story how it all happened. I saw an ad for The Bitcoin Classic and I sent an email introducing myself and saying that I was interested in taking pictures at his event. He sent me an email back saying he already had a media team but wanted to see if I could pass by the gym and get some footage to make a trailer for the event. A few days later I passed by for about 20 minutes and made the video. I don’t remember exactly how I did it but I then emailed him how I could be compensated. He said he could get me into the games for free. I remember, in addition to the tournament, there was a dunk contest, and a 3 point contest. While I can’t dunk, at that point in my life I was playing basketball everyday and I had gotten really good at shooting. I asked him if he could waive my fee to get a spot in the 3 point contest. He agreed and I ended up winning the 3 point contest. While I didn’t get paid for taking pictures that weekend, I got paid $2000 for winning the 3 point contest which was the most money I had ever had at that time. It was during the Bitcoin Classic that I realized how much more came with being a photographer than just taking and editing pictures.
