We had the good fortune of connecting with Aaron Marshall and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Aaron, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I grew up checking the right boxes, I got good grades in school, went to college, joined the military, worked my way up to own a tiny slice in a small corporation, I slowly realized that climbing a corporate ladder or “putting in my time” like the generations before me would not yield the same stable results. I wanted something better for my family that didn’t completely depend on working for someone else’s vision that often placed a ceiling on my value as an employee. I realized for someone with my skillset and background, the best way to build stability and flexibility for my family was to start our own business.

What should our readers know about your business?
I like to say Extra Mile Billing is in the business of “helping our clients sleep well at night.” Medical billing just doesn’t sound as exciting…snooze fest amiright? We don’t just do any type of medical billing though, we support clients focused on the future. Our clients are Speech, Physical, and Occupational Therapists (S.P.O.T.) businesses who treat pediatric clients. While it’s not the most lucrative sector of the industry, it is by far the most rewarding. Our clients treat children with developmental delays and disorders to help give them a future and a hope in a society that often overlooks them. We stand with them to ensure that not only can they support these children but so they can grow their businesses and thrive uncertain economic times. Recently I’ve helped spearhead a multi-year effort to convince Florida Medicaid to give my clients a much-needed rate increase. They haven’t had a meaningful increase in pay since the late 1990s so we’re helping them find their voice in the state legislature and tell their story. Hopefully by this time next year, we’ll see the kind of pay rates they need to tackle the future.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Our area is packed full of family-friendly activities. I think the first thing we would do is wake up and head to Juno Beach to hunt for some sharks teeth. We have some of the best shark teeth in the whole state of FL on our beaches. Then we would head to the best coffee shop on the eastern seaboard, Oceana coffee for some well-crafted brews. Lunch at leftovers cafe or U-Tiki Beach would be the next stop right before paddleboarding in the afternoon at blueline surfing co. Finally, we would end the night watching Ricky Young play to a live crowd at Tiki-52 for some drinks and apps.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Two books that I feel have helped me the most on my journey in small business are “The E-Myth” by Michael Gerber and “Profit-First” by Mike Michalowicz.
