We had the good fortune of connecting with Adam Lichterman and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Adam, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought behind starting any business is an opportunity. Big yachts, sport fishers, trawlers, really anything over 50′ all have large maintenance industries surrounding them for any and all types of service. Growing up in the marine industry, I noticed a lack of 3rd party care options for your average boat owner that has enough money to afford the luxury, but not enough time to familiarize and care for it. Salt water, being as harsh and corrosive at it is… care is everything. The knowledge and experience gathered during my time growing up made me an ideal candidate to fill this void. I saw my opportunity to fill the gap in the market and took it.
After working monthly service for a year and all going well, another opportunity presented itself after Hurricane Dorian hovered over the Bahamas for 3 days. My company Vessel Ready had an opportunity to switch gears, put the monthly services on hold and jump into action to provide relief efforts for Bahamians. We spent weeks collecting donations, packing shipping containers, loading a barge and then unpacking and distributing all of the donations in the Bahamas. It was one of the most rewarding experiences I may ever have.
This led to another opportunity which Vessel Ready took advantage of as the relief slowed down. A boat manufacturing company contracted us to set up shop and build their boats using resin vacuum infusion technology. Vessel Ready jumped at the opportunity and began putting a manufacturing facility together, hiring quality hands to help, modified molds to work with the process, and began building. 3 years and 25+ boats later, this has been the greatest opportunity yet.
All of this to say, taking a chance on opportunities that present themselves can create pathways to success that you would have never considered. It is always worth a shot.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Time to put on my other hat for Albury Brothers Boats. This company has had a deep impact in my life, right down to my heart and soul. I have heard from and hope the same for all of our hundreds of customers throughout the years. This brand was started and is still run by the Albury family in Man O’ War Cay, Abaco. Starting in 1952, Willard Albury, the patriarch of the Albury family, would form and fit each piece of wood for each boat by hand. Meticulously crafting beautiful wooden runabouts with the purpose of providing Bahamian out-islanders with seaworthy means of transportation between islands.
In the 80’s the family made a big change and began building the same timeless boats out of the latest technology, fiberglass and molds. Throughout this time the Albury family developed a reputation for building some of the most trustworthy, timeless, and quality built boats one could get their hands on. Big problem – it was very difficult to actually get your hands on one due to the production volume of maybe 10 boats a year.
In the early 2000’s, my dad (Jeff Lichterman) saw his opportunity to become a part of this brand. After some time spent learning the process’s involved, he got the blessing of Willard Albury to start producing Albury Brothers Boats in South Florida. This is where my life in the industry begins… well 10 years later when I was old enough to use power tools.
To me especially, there are so many things that make Albury Brothers Boats special, I will have to stick to the highlights. First, we focus on providing our customers with a beautifully balanced, structurally superior, and timeless boats. Something that Grandpa to Grandson can use in or off shore easily and with peace of mind for those back on shore. Second, what sets us apart from most brands is our philosophy of “less is more”. “Less is more” means less time getting service, more time creating memories on the water with family and friends. Rather than selling a customer all the new gizmos and gadgets debuted in the last issue of their favorite magazine, we strongly urge our customers to stick to necessities that we know are reliable and will provide the most stress free ownership possible. Third, the most special thing about Albury Brothers Boats is that it has been and will be maintained as a small family owned business that provides a very personal boat buying and building experience for our customers. We are semi-custom, meaning our customers have the opportunity to choose many options like colors, power, interiors, electronics, etc.. Working with our customers and seeing their imaginations come to life is something that will never get old.
Lastly, many peoples favorite part, Albury’s heritage. As I mentioned before this all started with Willard Albury in 1952 on a small island in the Bahamas. From him, his two sons Don and Jamie have followed in his footsteps and carried the Albury name, building the same beautiful boats on the waterfront in Man O’ War Cay. In the U.S., My dad has done his part to carry the legacy of the Albury’s for the last 20 years. My excitement comes with being a part of the next generation of Albury Brothers, continuing the legacy of Willard Albury and building on top of what the generations before me have accomplished.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had a friend visiting me, and the weather was cooperating, there would be a jam packed weekend on the water planned on one of our boats. Starting off before sun up offshore fishing, making our way into Jupiter or Palm Beach inlet for a late lunch at any of the great restaurants on the water to cook our catch, and topping it all off with sunset drinks at the sandbar. It doesn’t get much better than this!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout belongs to my Mom & Dad. Cliche’ I know. They truly have been the driving force in my life. I dont know what wild roads I would have ended up on without them. They deserve all of the love, respect, and recognition I could ever give. Love you both so so much and I am forever grateful.
