We had the good fortune of connecting with Alessandro Sarno and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alessandro, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
My all life has been based on unconscious risk taking. With unconscious I mean that when I took certain decisions I just did because I had no other choice. So, yes we can call them risks but in reality they were only “forced” decisions. For example when I left Italy and moved to Miami in search of a new life I had no idea one day I’d become a photographer. Things just happened one after the next just connecting the dots that were already marked.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I don’t really know what sets me apart from others, Before being an artist I am a person and every person is different in every way. Where I am today is just a consequence of believing in my passion and opening up my feeling through photography. I always looked for a way to express my creativity but it’s only recently that I discovered that the medium was photography. Challenges of course are many, especially the financial one so you have to focus and never give up. The best part is when you get an unexpected email from a potential client who wants to buy your prints for a home decor project or when an important book store calls you because they want your latest book. What I’d like is simply that people look at my everyday life photos and get some sort of feeling and empathy. I like to share. That’s the most rewarding thing.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I have so many favorite places in Miami that is difficult to make a list…I love the whole Miami so it’s only about the mood I am in to pick the areas I want to be… Coconut Grove, Little River, Miami Beach, North Beach, Downtown Miami, Coral Gables, El Portal Village, Key Biscayne and Pinewood Cemetery in Pinecrest.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Yes, this is so very true especially in my case. It is only because some people around me looking at my photos started to tell me that I should have done something with it, pursue it, try hard to make it my passion and profession. I’d like to thank Melissa Ortiz, Nigel Bower, Dr. David Allen, Michael Mccabe, Courtney Benjamin and all the people who encouraged me since the beginning.
