We had the good fortune of connecting with Mike LAVECCHIA and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mike, what do you attribute your success to?
It’s always been very important to us to stay true to our original goals and values. Building the best surfboards we can, by hand, using traditional methods combined with local and sustainable materials has always been our core mission. Sharing the process with surfers, putting the tools in their hands helps ensure they value the final product on a level that’s impossible to achieve with a board bought off the shelf. Our boards are built to last a lifetime and if people understand what goes into them, they’re unlikely to ever see a landfill.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Grain Surfboards builds high performance wooden surfboards by hand here in Maine from local sustainable woods. Our goal has always been to combine advanced technology when designing our surfboards, together with time honored traditional wood working methods to create our boards. We have strived to built lightweight performance based shapes, but without the use of foam and other modern petroleum based products.

By using our traditional process, we’re able to slow down and enjoy what we do. The use of simple hand tools also allows us to share this experience with others through our surfboard kits and multi day workshop experiences.

We continually strive to improve and refine our process and are always looking to incorporate new design elements and advanced materials.

These efforts over the last two years allowed us to introduce two new products. Our GreenRail surfboards incorporate 100% recycled #1 plastic into our boards. While the core of these boards is made from cedar, the outline “rail” of the board is built up of recycled plastic, helping to support a more circular economy.

This spring, after several years of R&D, we launched our PlyBeam Surfboard Kits. These kits are fully machine precision cut using marine plywood, require fewer tools and know-how and are super intuitive to put together. Great for anyone with a busy life who still desires getting into the board building process.

17 years in and we’re still as excited as we were on day one, and that’s a testament to the dedication of our crew here in the shop. We’ve hit lot’s of big hurdles all along the way, but I think our key to success has been to stay focused and lean, avoid debt, and keep evolving what we do.

In the end, I’m most proud that we have stuck with our original values and goals. We’ve created a business that allows us all to enjoy what we do each day, to find fulfillment in the process of creating something beautiful and functional, and using it all to connect with an incredible community and share our passion with others.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
We’d like to thank all of the shapers, artists, musicians, makers, activists, customers, followers and friends who have been along our side since we started. We literally wouldn’t be here without the community we’re proud to be a part of.
