We had the good fortune of connecting with Alex Workman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alex, what do you attribute your success to?
Photography is more than just taking photos of people. It’s not only my job to capture a photo, but to take the time I have with a person to really get to know them and make them feel valuable and beautiful. I have lived in Tallahassee from 7 1/2 years and I realized that there are so many people I know of, but don’t truly know. So I decided to set a goal to have coffee with 100 different people throughout 2021. I put up a public calendar and asked people on social media to sign up, having no idea who would take me up on my project. I started on January 4th, 2021 and by the end of that month, I had already made it to #29. As time went on, I scaled back my availability but I made it to my goal of 100 by the middle of May. There was no reason to stop there, so I continued for the rest of the year. On December 31st, I had the final coffee at 163.
The idea was more than growing my brand or making myself known, but rather getting to know my community and the people I have worked with, or will hopefully one day work with. There is incredible value in being known. So many people are known of, but when you take the time to truly get to KNOW someone, perspective shifts, barriers come down, and humanity takes over. What would happen if we all started to be more intentional about getting to know people so those people are more than just their titles, their hobbies, or their handles but those people become valuable and important? I don’t know why that ever got lost. Think about how the world could change if we started truly getting to know one another.
The success of my brand is more than the product I create, but the intentionality of how I create. I have the opportunity to breathe life into people. People remember their experiences, and word of mouth goes a long way, especially where I am.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Every day we have the opportunity to breathe life into people. The art that we create is more than just photographs. It’s telling people’s stories. It’s about community. Our goal is to create beautiful art and build relationships as we do so. At the end of the day, your title is a part of who you are but you are more than your title. We have photographed people from many different backgrounds and positions, and we treat whoever is behind the lens the same. They are the most important thing and we want to do everything we can to make sure they love their portrait. m
We never imagined we would be where we are today.,
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In Tallahassee our favorite spots are La Florida Coffee and Wine, Poco Vino, Bar 1903, Charlie Park and Kool Beanz (must get dessert from James Beard Nominee Sylvia Gould)
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Amanda Morrison has been a huge supporter of our business from very early on . She is an entrepreneur in Tallahassee that has branched off to do her own thing, from running a bar out of an old gas station, to curating dinners at her new wine shop and event space. She has hired us for many shoots of the products she carries and the spaces she occupies, but also is the first to jump on board with any new ideas we have. We both have the same goals and passions to make our city a better place, so it’s been fun to watch her success over the years in making Tallahassee a more fun, inviting community.
