We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexa Roxelin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I’m a passionate belly dancer, content creator, and cultural producer from Nicaragua. I started belly dancing when I was fourteen years old, before that I used to imitate my Lebanese grandfather when he would moved his stomach like waves, I found it very funny so I kept doing it. I like to think that belly dance chose me. The way I teach belly dancing has changed over the years as I have grown up. For me belly dancing, it’s a transformative experience that resignifies our relationship with pleasure, sensuality, and body liberation. I have seen the positive changes it has made in my students, and that’s what keeps me going. A quick story time: I attended a belly dance workshop led by one of my favorite dancers back in 2016 in Costa Rica, little did I know that I was going to reaffirm that the way I teach represents my values. During one of the classes she that women with longer hair and big boobs are more attractive to men when belly dancing. I was confused and self-aware. But I realized that was not me, and it will not be me. Since then, In my classes, I create a safe space where people feel free to express themselves and embark on a journey to self-discovery and empowerment.
I have performed in many events, tv shows, music videos, and even newspapers, but when I’m teaching I am the happiest! I have a certification in Body, Eroticism, and Sexuality which taught me so much about myself to the point that now I share these amazing tools in my belly dance classes. My journey inspired me to create content about sexuality on my social media platforms as a way to express myself creatively. I’ve had the opportunity to model five times for Raw Figs and I feel that belly dance has given me so much confidence in my body. On the other hand, I also create content and manage social media accounts for businesses and companies. And for the sake of keep sharing secrets I was an actress in the first web series in Nicaragua called Managua Furiosa, believe me, I didn’t know that I was good at acting either!
When it comes to cultural production I co-founded Amalgama, a cultural project in Nicaragua back in 2015. We used to do monthly cultural events for three years with emerging and well-known artists from different disciplines. It all started from the need to have a space where a dancer, a musician, or a poet would perform on the same night. We realized that cultural events were segmented like dancers here, musicians over there, and poets all the way there. We wanted to bring them together in one event. I was in charge of running the production and artist relations. It was an amazing experience that left me with a lot of artist friends and a realization that I love working with artists at cultural events. I have had the opportunity to work in production for iii Points, Poplife, Defy Culture, Unsin, and now with The Creative Club!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would take her to live music events, there are good spots in the Wynwood area like 1-800 Lucky, Dante’s Hifi, Miami Sound Bar, and Gramps; OMG she’s definitely trying Gramps pizza! There’s also a new music venue in town called ZeyZey, so i would take her to that one as well. I want her to feel like a local so I would take her to my friend’s Better Me workout class and to Natali Melani’s yoga class as well. Both are so energetic classes! We would go to La Latina to eat arepas venezonalas (I love them so she has to try them too lol) pizza from Andiamo, my favorite donut at The Salty Donut, and Peruvian food at Divino Ceviche. There are cool events going on so if it’s happening that week we would go to Raw Figs (I’ve modeled for them and it’s very chill) The Creative Club, and Rum and Coke!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I definitely want to shoutout the women in my life that was thought me how to become a woman with their life example; professionally, higiene wise and spiritual wise. My partner Luis that has encourage me to become better, reminding me that there’s always an opportunity to go beyond our own expectations. My mom and my dad that have supported me with my life decisions, even if they don’t agree with them one hundred percent but they are there for me and that’s what matters the most. Last but not least a book called “La vaca” that my friend Marcie gifted me back in 2019, that book changed my life’.
