We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexander Sharp and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexander, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
This is going to sound really cliché but its people. I’m a huge people person. I love getting to know people, and through my work I get to meet interesting people every. single. day. Each project that I cast for varies on what it’s looking to achieve through its cast. From strategic masterminds, hoping to reach their goal of winning a large cash prize to people with inspirational stories who will stop at nothing to ensure this planet becomes a better place, twenty somethings who are on a soul-searching mission to find themselves, packing up everything in their lives in order move to a new city – all while on camera! I’ve already seen and learned so much from all the people I’ve worked with, and I can’t wait to keep seeing what other crazy stories are out there, waiting to be discovered.
I’m inspired by a lot of the people that I talk to, and I even find myself rooting for them throughout the casting process, while there are many steps after me to getting cast on a show, I’m always in their corner to hype them up, regardless of whether or not they end up on TV. By sharing all of their stories with me, they help me understand who they are, what struggles they’ve been through and where they hope to go with each project.
Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I think what sets me a part from others is that I’m not sure there was ever a time in my life when I didn’t want to do what I’m currently doing. Some people want to be a teacher, a pilot, a business owner etc., but I knew I wanted to work in Reality TV since I was about five years old. It was like my mind was fused to the TV remote and since then been I’ve been channel surfing through the different phases of my life.
I still get excited that I get to work on the shows and projects that I do work on, especially since I used to watch a lot of these shows growing up. But like everything in life, there are the ups and the downs and there is no such thing as a direct path, I’ve had my fair share of highs and lows in the industry, and have even been told to switch out of the casting world from my first job.
Of course, that hurt but that was one person’s opinion, and I was determined to prove to myself that they are wrong, I asked them what I need to improve on, and took it from there. I would want people to know that I really do care about my work; and if they combine that with a little bit (or sometimes a lot) of resilience, hard work and a bit of luck, they can have a successful start in casting, I say start because I’m just beginning. There is still so much more that I need to learn and grow with in my career, and I can’t wait to see where it takes me.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Full transparency here, I moved to Miami during the pandemic and part of me still feels like a tourist, but I feel like I am slowly starting to get the hang of it. Having grown up in Greece, I have never shied away from being at the beach so if I were on a week-long trip, I would ideally want several of those days on the beach, moving upwards from South Beach to Palm Beach, if there’s nice sand and blue water, I’m there.
If the weather isn’t great, my favorite brunch spots are either the Social Club or Morgan’s in Wynwood for all the hearty brunch food everyone wants after a night out. If we’re going out for dinner, my go-to spot is Panne Vino in South Beach, highly recommend their handmade pasta. If we’re feeling a bit more on the fancy side, I’m definitely a big fan of grabbing dinner at Komodo for some Asian fusion or Rusty Pelican for some solid surf and turf, they also make really good martinis.
Overall, if you’re looking for a fun time Miami, you really can look [almost] anywhere and you’ll find it, Miami really lives up to it’s reputation! In the next few months I’m really looking forward to Art Basel (in December) since I’ve never been before as well as exploring more areas of Miami that I’m not familiar with yet.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
First and foremost, I have to say that I really have the best family on earth. Their support and love mean everything and I wouldn’t be anywhere without them so truly this whole article is dedicated to my loving parents, supportive brothers and fantastic extended family (aunts, uncles, cousins and so many more…. I’m Greek so I could be here all day listing off names of the amazing people that make up my family.)
Growing up I had a learning difference called Convergence Insufficiency, which means that it was hard to concentrate in class, it took me longer to take tests, etc etc. But the craziest part of growing up with my learning difference was that as I kid, I really didn’t feel that “different” than the rest of the kids. That’s because my parents worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure that I was getting the correct support in class, and when I would come home to my siblings and grandparents, nothing ever felt out of place – I always felt so supported that at times I didn’t even notice the support I had. That being said, having a learning difference also meant that I did need to stand up for myself and find my voice at a young age. I distinctly remember my parents sitting me down and telling me if I didn’t feel like I was being treated correctly in class that I should immediately voice my opinions to my teacher – and unfortunately for them, I really don’t think I’ve stopped sharing my opinions since!
Several years and countless opinions later, I have become who I am today, but certainly not without the help of the mentors I have had throughout my years in the casting industry. I really found my niche in the TV world and there isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t love doing what I do, except maybe that last hour of work on a Friday, those sometimes never end (just kidding!) and I have so many people to thank, from the casting Director I met at my very first job, who took a chance on me, and to the producers that I have worked and laughed with over the years on several projects, I now consider them all my friends. I am so grateful that they have taught me the ins and outs of the industry and I continue to learn from them every day.
So there you have it, these are the people who deserve far more than a little credit in my story. You all know who you are, and I am so beyond lucky to have every single one of you in my life.
