We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexandra Rey and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Alexandra, what’s your definition for success?
Success to me as an artist means achieving technical mastery in my chosen medium, having the freedom to explore my ideas, emotions, and thoughts through my art, achieving financial stability through my work, and creating art that resonates with and touches the lives of others.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
One of the most special things I enjoy as an artist is connecting with my collectors through love. Love for life, love for animals and nature and embracing this big beautiful world. No matter what your beliefs are, there is a universal language that all living beings respond to and that is what I tap into through my work. Whether I’m creating a hyper realistic portrait of someone’s beloved pet or an abstract loaded with emotions and thoughts. The viewer always gets it, because I’m speaking without words and that makes me feel incredibly fulfilled and proud. Over my 20 years as a working artist, I have tirelessly learned and perfected my technique, pushing myself to always be better. Although I’ve been my worst critic, I’ve learned to turn that inner voice into a motivator, constantly striving to improve my craft.

My career has been challenging, and I’ve faced many personal and professional obstacles. However, I’ve learned that the key to success is perseverance. When you want something, you must fight for it with all you have. Even when you fall down, you must pick yourself up and keep going. Progress comes from moving forward, so don’t give up. This is a lesson I believe can benefit not only artists but anyone who is struggling in life.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I always say I live in paradise and I truly believe it. There are so many things to do and places to see I can go on forever. First thing of course, would be to go to the beach. There’s a lovely little beach in Bal Harbour that I enjoy the most and kayaking at Oleta River State Park is also one of my favorite spots, especially the full moon kayak tour. No tour of Miami is complete without a visit to Wynwood, where dining at Doya is a really good option. A visit to Lincoln Rd. and definitely some great dining and drinks in Brickell at places like Komodo or Nikko by Sunshine.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The biggest shoutout goes to my family, I have the most supportive, strong and amazing sisters that cheer me on every step of the way and celebrate my success as if it were their own.
