We had the good fortune of connecting with Alexei Geronimo and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Alexei, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I decided to pursue a career in dance because of my love for it. I always knew it was possible for me to make a living doing what I love and not choose the conventional career path that my family may originally have thought for me. I’m happy I followed my own path and listen to my instincts.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I think my skill set falls into different areas of expertise. I have danced and performed on big world stages but I have also been able to take on jobs that are relevant to my industry including judging dance competitions, film and tv, assisting, directing, choreographing, acting and even some background work. I try not to limit myself when it comes to work, but my I’m finding that my real passion is in movement whether it’s performing it or creating and teaching it to others. I’ve started to find a new love in teaching and directing where I’m giving to other performers who are starting their own careers.
It definitely hasn’t been an easy path as I’ve had to try different jobs to see what I enjoy and what I don’t. I believe it takes time and exploration to find what you’re really passionate about. I think I have a lot of drive and tenacity which is what keeps me going despite any rejections I’ve faced along the way. The entertainment industry has its ups and downs but can be very rewarding when you figure out your niche and where you can thrive. I’ve learned that the path you may have had in your mind may not always happen when you’d like but the universe or whatever you believe in can give you what you need at the time.
I’ve definitely had a diverse career that hasn’t necessarily been a straight path in my industry. With dance, you see people either working in film and tv, live stage or branching out into teaching and directing. It’s not as common for people to dabble in different areas of the entertainment industry which I feel I have. I like to keep my options open because I feel that is how I can discover new things about myself.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If my friend were in the area, I would probably take them to South Beach where there we can lay at the beach and then grab some food and drink afterwards, then if I have energy, possibly go out to Fort Lauderdale. Other areas, I would take them to explore would be Wynwood for a more artsy local feel and the Brickell for some shopping and more night life.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I think there have been numerous influences and voices throughout my career. First off, I would like to thank my first teachers at my local dance studio where I grew up – Heather Joosten who pushed me to keep dancing in my high school years and to travel outside of Canada to grow and develop. I also thank my post-secondary dance education at the Edge Performing Arts Centre in Los Angeles and the director at the time, Bill Prudich. If I weren’t for being accepted into this program I would not have known my own potential. I would also like to thank the numerous choreographers and directors who have given me the opportunity to travel the world live my dreams.
